Olas de Oro is a top quality complex of villas and apartments right next to the beach about 1k out of Cabarete. They are priced at the higher end of the market in Cabarete.
We booked Villa 18, a three bed villa with its own pool as a special treat for a retirement holiday with our family. Although the villa was lovely we were hugely disappointed by the amount of building work and associated noise that was taking place all around. When we arrived we noticed that renovation was taking place in the villa next door but we were assured by the management that all work had finished for the time being and we would be left in peace, that was incorrect, the next day there was a huge amount of noise from next door with continual banging at digging new cable routes throughout the property and completely stripping the plaster from the interior, these guys haven’t got power tools so there was about half a dozen of them with hammer and cold chisel going at it solid for nine hours a day. We complained again to the management who spoke with the contractors and were assured again that the noise would stop, the next day was even worse and so we asked them again to intervene. They were not able to stop it. The management did their best though and as an alternative to a refund gave us the use of a smaller apartment for the rest of the first week with a shared pool for the daytime which was better than experiencing the continual noise and also I have to say having workmen peering over the fence when my daughter tried to sunbathe.
The following week we were given a very nice three bedroomed apartment again though with a shared pool. However again building work started right outside on a communal path this time in respect of which the management must have known, at least on this occasion they were able to delay the work when once again, you guessed it, we had to complain.
If you are contemplating booking a holiday at either the Olas de Oro villas or apartments you need to be aware of the building work that’s going on and check with the management before you go. We were lucky in that there was somewhere else available for us to stay on the complex, but had it been full then our holiday would have been ruined as the management, despite their best intentions would have been powerless to help. We have been assured that the management will not be taking any bookings at affected villas but I would still advise that if you have booked a villa, particularly 20, 17 or 18 that you check as the work going on in that area on the villa next door to us appeared extensive.
One other thing the balcony in Villa 18 does not have anything like the direct ocean view as advertised on their website!
Most importantly you will also need to be aware that construction is soon to start on the Millenium Complex right next door to the eastern side of the site ( see photos) which will affect many of the villas and also the apartments at Olas de Oro. This is a huge project and will take a long time to complete and in our view will affect those in this part of Olas de Oro for some time to come so again you need to be check where your villa is on the site and book something on the western side or indeed consider some place else until the work is completed.
