“Nice Hotel with a wide range of rooms and a pool”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 December 2011

The golden express is out of town between Nauynag U and Old Bagan. We found it quiet and Convienient and the staff was great. The rooms in early Dec. 2011 ranged from $21 to $45. W had a $34 one and it was quite OK the pool is a grat place for a mid day break. Breakfasts in the garden were quite nice. It's not the newest place or the nicest but it seemed a good value and good location. Mu Miat in cart #109, can be found out front, he was a nice Guide to the temples and quite helpful over our 3 days of touring in his cart..

Room Tip: They have a range of rooms have them show you all. 2nd Storey in the back buildung were nice.

When it comes to travelling in Myanmar there are not that many resources to help you prepare your trip: actually, I think there are only two reliable books, Lonely Planet and The Guide du Routard, and that’s just about it. Plus, once you are in the country where there is limited internet connectivity, your Lonely becomes your best travel companion, if not your travel bible…

We arrived in Bagan from Yangon with the early morning Air Bagan flight without a hotel booking arranged. What we had though was a couple of selections from the Lonely, including the Golden Express Hotel. We asked our taxi driver to take us there (5,000K fixed fee from the airport), but he suggested we check the Bagan Princess next door first (35USD per night negotiated down to 32USD)… We wanted a pool and the one at the Princess was out of order when we arrived.

Despite the clean and beautifully laid out room at the Princess, we thought we would check out the Golden Express, with the hope that the pool would be working there. The room we were shown (32USD) was nowhere near as nice as the one at the Princess but we thought we would settle for it since the pool was working properly.

Our room (506) was ok-ish… but soon after checking in we realized that the loft above it was inhabited by a colony of pigeons… So we asked to be moved to another room, on the ground floor, number 406. Identical in lay-out, it was far from what the other hotel had on offer though: dated bathroom, poor water pressure, bed head boards with plastic wrapping around them…

Breakfast was quite poor and staff overall not particularly helpful. Internet connection is only via the hotel’s computer and is very slow, charged at 1200K per hour… We rented bikes for 3000K per day and found a horse cart outside the hotel for 15,000K a day…

Location wise the hotel is outside of the “centre” of Nyang U but you will reach the main restaurant street in a matter of minutes (we tried Black Bamboo and Aroma 2 Indian restaurant which were both very good, highly recommended), although you may need to brave the darkness on your way back since there is very little public lighting on the way…

The pool at the hotel was OK but nothing exceptional. Not the sort of pool where you would see yourself spending an entire afternoon sipping frozen margheritas…

Retrospectively I would have rather checked in at the Bagan Princess but here you go…

The hotel is located on the road between New and Old Bagan, I thought this was very convenient. The staff was very helpful when we tried to book our next hotels. I definitely enjoyed the breakfast in the garden and relaxing by the pool after one day of biking in the temples. The rooms are clean and spacious, with TV and hot water. There are 2 very good restaurants within walking distance (local food). Bike rental and airport transfer.
+ pool and great breakfast in the garden
- there was a night religious ceremony 50 metres away when we stayed, could not sleep all night. Though I think this was just bad timing.

Visiting Bagan in June is HOT. The Golden Express is on the outskirts of Nyaung U but was perfect as it has a clear pool, clean spacious rooms and generator airconditioning overnight - great value at US$36 for a triple. Breakfast was on the lawn with yummy mohinga. Bikes to hire, cheap laundry and intermittent internet access (but not available when we were there - power or connection issues!). so very good all round. A little out of town but a couple of restaurants not too far away. Close to the temples and the old Bagan.

The hotel is located close to the temples and has a few good restaurants within walking distance. We took a horsecart to take us round the temples one day which was good though we had to bargain a bit to get a good price. Another day we took the bikes from the hotel. Make sure you take the correct tracks to the temples as we got lost and ended up going through rough terrain. Later in the day the pedal of my bike fell off and I had to leave the bike in a village down the road. Initially the hotel wanted me to walk the bike all the way back which would have taken hours but they eventually agreed that I could leave it in a shop.

Rooms were clean with a TV. The air conditioning worked well. Unfortunately though we had a couple of cockroaches and a mosquito in the room on the first night. Luckily we got rid of them and then during the rest of our stay we were more or less free of insects. Also the shower was very weak and though there was hot water, it dribbled out very slowly.

The buffet breakfast was not that great and a lot of the food did not seem that fresh - the fruit especially. A couple of times we skipped it and went to the Eden BBB Restaurant instead which we had to pay for but was really nice.

The staff were quite friendly overall but the Manager seems to be in a permanent bad mood and is always lurking around the front desk.

In conclusion the hotel is spacious and very well located in peaceful surroundings, though there are several ways it could be improved.
