Along with Inle Lake and Shedagon Paya, the temples of Bagan are the must see attraction in Burma. There are over 2000 of them spread across a plain along the banks of the Irrewaddy river, though you don't need to see them all! There are several ways to see the temples: by hot air balloon if you have the money and are there at the right time of year. By bike. By horse and cart. Though we chose the easiest: with a private driver and guide in an airconditioned 4x4. Well worth the 50,000 Kyat. We actually only went to 8 or 9 temples: the biggest and most famous. We were inteding to rent a bike and go back the following day to see a few more of the less obvious ones, but April (the hottest (not to mention cruellest) month in Burma) is not that good a time for cycling. Well worth the trip to Bagan just for the experience.
