Background: A colleague and I were in the Tanjore in September 2008 on business but flew out of Tiruchirappalli (Trichy), the nearest airport to Tanjore. Our flight from Trichy to Chennai was canceled and since it was the last flight of the day, the airline put us up for the night at Royal Southern Hotel (also known as SRM Hotel) located about 1 mile from the airport.
General: The hotel is somewhat isolated with no nearby restaurants or shopping. However the hotel has a coffee shop and a restaurant. There is a swimming pool but it needed cleaning. The air conditioning in the main lobby was not working (under repair) although the rooms were cool (the temperature was not adjustable except for fan speed).
Accommodations: The hotel is fairly new and the rooms were were spacious (king size beds) and generally tidy and clean, although there were several mosquitoes flying around the room. The "electric bug zapper" appeared to have no effect. The amenities (shampoo, conditioner) were the smallest bottles I have ever encountered -- barely enough shampoo for one washing.
Food: The restaurant served fairly good Indian food and some "continental" dishes. I ordered the vegetarian sizzler. Portions were large although some of the items included in the dish were surprising (for instance, the battered, deep-fried pineapple slices were good but seemed a little out of place along with a somewhat sweet spaghetti, a stuffed pepper, a stuffed tomato, and two large vegetable cutlets). The buffet breakfast leaned heavily towards Indian cuisine (the usual dosa, idily, and wada) but cold cereal, toast, pastries, eggs, and fruit were also available (although the fruit came out just as we were leaving).
Front Desk: The attitude of the front desk personnel was the rudest I have experienced in a long time. They appeared to be more interested in penny pinching rather than in meeting the needs of stranded travelers. Initially, they tried to put both of us men in the same room sharing a king size bed. Only under protest did they add another room. Check in took over half an hour. Since front desk personnel are usually very helpful in India, we suspect this is a management dictate, attempting to maximize income from the airlines.
A major irritant was the pricing of internet access which exceeds the Hilton, Marriott, and other major hotels around the world. We needed wireless internet access for at least 10 hours but only 1 hour slots (at 60 rupees or US$1.33 per hour) were initially made available.(which works out to US$32 a day). After several calls to the local airline office (since the hotel manager could not be reached), a better deal was finally worked out -- but without much "grace" from the front desk. However, the IT person was exceptionally helpful and set us up so that we did not have to renew passwords on an hourly basis.
I cannot recommend this hotel. The front desk staff were rude and there were no nearby facilities.
