To start with, the management forces people to book their tickets online. The tickets for Phase I are available but for Phase 2 are very often sold out. They are mostly booked by the 'guides' who sell them to you at a premium if provided you hire a guide. The whole system encourages guides to make money.

Also the booking timeslots that one opts for don't make sense because one can never board a gondola in the given timeslots due to the mismanagement of the long queues.

The queues at the gondola station are so badly managed that people are jumping the queue all the time. The 'guides' are hand-in-glove with the management and they make their clients jump the queue saving them over an hour (or two) which other people need to go through.

The maintenence of the gondolas is pathetic. The interiors are shabby and definitely not worth the money one has to shell out for the ride.

Overall, the gondola operators need to get their act together to make it a pleasurable experience for travellers who come from all over.

Ours was a family trip with 5 adults and 2 kids. Tickets were booked online though Cash Buying option is available at the ticketing counter. A lady in the group helps as the queue is separate for the fairer sex. If staying in Srinagar, start early to beat the rush.

In case of plans to visit II phase, it's advisable to rent boots, gloves n jackets at places close to the counter. Complete this activity in the time the passes are being collected. One needs to collect the printed boarding passes at this counter that cost INR 700 and 900 for the first and second phase respectively.

Be prepared to wait and the ride is indeed test of patience. Guides/ Touts throng the place to obtain tickets for the ones who arrive without prior booking and try all kinds of tricks to ensure they place their clients ahead in the waiting queue. The entry gate is 70/80 mts away from the ticketing counter.

Once inside one needs to patiently edge ahead in the serpentine manner as the tourists are all waiting to board the first phase ride. The Gondola can seat max 6 persons and at times they tend to be under utilised. The view from them is completely worth the wait! No snow at the first phase in June yet the landscape is fantastic.

In case one plans to visit the second phase; hopping on to the second ride would be wiser. The gondolas are newer and bright red in color and they compliment the second stage. It's a beautiful view from top of the mountain and surely can't be missed.

Important that one keeps track of time at the high altitude, especially travelers with kids and older persons.

Couldn't spot any accessible first aid kit or any fire extinguisher. Nobody wearing any uniform to indicate that they were the part of state authorities operating the gondolas.

All in all, a lifetime experience and a wonderful Gondola ride that boasts to be the world's highest!!

We didn't know that booking for Phase 2 (higher level than Phase 1) will be full so soon. Better book tickets for this phase before you leave for your trip. A storm or no-ice might disappoint you at Phase 2. Better book a ticket for Phase 1 via a tour guide and then take a pony ride to glacier. If you have visited Sonmarg, you won't find Gulmarg so amazing.

This title is completely based on my experience in the month of June where you will not find any snow in phase 1. Breathtaking Gandola ride to phase 2 which is around 15 minutes, some awesome views and clear snow - you will cherish these your lifetime.
Since this was rush period, queue wait was as high as half an hour for phase 2, both arrival and departure. Would advice you directly go to phase 2 and if you want , you may visit phase 1 later.
Some tips,
- hire a guide (not more than 600 or 700) who will ease some of your stuff and can be in queue for you. Also will give you some useful tips
- must book ticket online as in case you get late, your entry will not be denied.
I was with my 5 year daughter and hence can't go to top of this peak in phase 2 but you can easily view LOC from there.
I stayed for one night in near by hotel - Royal Park where I will share my experience there.
But would advice you to stay for a night to experience some really great views in evening and some nature noise in night..
