“A must for anyone visiting Gulmarg”
Reviewed 10 October 2012

Gulmarg is one of Kashmir's prettiest and most visited destinations. And the town's top attraction is its Gondola ride. No point just going upto level one as the views one gets from there are comparable to anywhere in Kashmir. Even if there is snow, it will be mostly be melting, old and brown. But go up to level two, and everything changes. I went in May and even as the cable car took us up between the two levels, we could see the mountains get steeper and the snow become whiter. The mist on the glass, and the fog just added to the excitement. When we finally reached level 2 and stepped out, it was snowing and we were in knee deep snow immediately. All around us we could see only white, and the view from here was fantastic. There are a few guides here offering skiing services and will try to con you into believing that the LOC is just a kilometre away, but that's not true. You can, however see the last Indian army base when you are here.

As a few reviewers have mentioned earlier, once you arrive in the valley, you can either go up to the ticketing gate by horse, or on foot. In the summer, there are hordes of tourists so riding on a pony can be irksome especially because there is hardly any space on the road, and the poor horses keep bumping into each other, or have to stop every other minute. The distance is less, so walking will not be a problem. Hire a pony not because it will be more comfortable, but only if you want to help out the locals. In a state largely ravaged by politics, there are few employment opportunities, and tourism and the associated avenues it opens, is one of the few ways for the locals to earn money.

“Gulmarg Gondola Experience”
Reviewed 7 October 2012

Gulmarg gondola is the two-stage ropeway , the first stage transfers from the Gulmarg resort at 8,530 ft to Kongdoori Station in the bowl-shaped Kongdori valley and the second stage of the ropeway takes skiers to a height of 12,293 ft on Kongdoori Mountain. Unfortunately we could not able to ride second stage since it was cancelled because of rainfall. Anyway we stayed in the Kongdori valley, spent 3 hours, roaming around and return to Gulmarg valley. You can have horse ride over there but a bit expensive. Just after you leave your car in the parking many tourist guide will come and offer you a horse ride up to the Gondola or even up to the first stage. They will also offer you warm clothing and many other facilities. Please do not fall in their trap, just avoid them. Because it take 15 min. walk to the base of the Gondola from the parking and you will have beautiful scenic beauty of the valley. No point of having a horse ride there. Again it is expensive and they will charge for everything. So just explore yourself and enjoy the natural beauty of the Valley.

“Amazing experience”

I liked the scenic beauty and the ride, but disliked the long wait. I should have booked tickets online.

“Amazing experience”
Reviewed 4 October 2012

on 30 Sept'12, I took the Gondola (Cable car) ride to the 13500 ft Aparwat top. Was truly amazing trip in the french built cable car- trip resembles Swiss Alps ride- sans the snow for this period of time. First part of the ride (from Gulmarg to kongdoor ) was scenic, second part from kongdoor to Aparwat was more of adventure. and there was snow at the top. One piece of advice- try and book the ticket - atleast the first part - online. At times the queues can be quite long and the ticket issuing process at the local counter is pretty slow- making the wait pretty long. But such type of Gondola ride is unique in India. It must be really terrific during Jan- Feb with snow all around. The fare for first part is Rs 300 and that of second part is Rs 500 per person.

“Atrocious facilities for so many visitors”
Reviewed 30 September 2012

There is no way to know if you will get a ticket beforehand and you may be told they are sold out. For a revolving ride how can tickets be sold out?? The station at the end of stage 1 is pathetic, in even minor rain it gets slushy with puddles everywhere. The stairs to and from the cable car are bad and its a really sorry state for a big tourist attraction to be in.
