To skip long bus hours until Caracas we stopped in Maracaibo for one night and stayed in Cumberland Hotel. The city isn't pretty so we slept and left next morning but it was good enough to rest, eat (includes a buffet breakfast), get help from locals to exchange dollars and talk with some Venezuelanos. The room had a sort of small bed but the shower was good and even had TV. All was clean and we felt save. It's more expensive to book it via Internet because of the ridiculous official exchange rates, so get there and pay with bolivar fuerte and the unofficial exchange rates.

Stayed: August 2015, travelled as a couple

This is an old building Hotel in Maracaibo city. Very clean rooms. It's perfect if you're looking to crash the night in a not so expensive place. They have room service, breakfast and free wifi in all rooms.

This place is not too bad but I wouldn't recommend a long stay
Positives: Price (reasonable even at the official exchange rate), room and bathroom was pretty clean, tv in the room, bookable online (many places in Venezuela don't seem to be and its necessary for the visa on arrival to have the booking!), felt safe within the hotel
Negatives: Restaurant food was terrible and not that cheap, place does look a bit dated, nothing in the immediate area

The hotel is old, rooms are old and kind of dirty, no remote control for the old TV in the room. Locked AC either ON or OFF so you should sleep all coverd since turning it off in Maracaibo is not an option. Breakfast is poor, scrambled eggs ( look dirty and dry), Fish stew, arepas, meat empanadas or toasts, coffee on a plastic glass and poorly served. Most decent place I manage to found arround USD100 in Maracaibo
