“Excellent value, gorgeous views, great location and friendly service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 March 2012

Our stay at the Argyll was absolutely perfect for what we were expecting. The staff were very friendly, the pub food very good (particularly the curry night dinner we had when we arrived), the pub was a treat, our room was small, clean, everything was in perfect working order and the views over the harbor were lovely. Waking up to dawn over the harbor every morning was a great start to each day. The hotel itself may be a bit older, and an upgrade to the rooms would raise my review a star, but it is certainly on par for western Scotland small coastal hotels (at a similar price point), and is within the appropriate atmosphere. Someone commented about the stairs being dangerous, but that seemed a bit odd to us, unless one was elderly or physically handicapped. I would suggest using care on the stairs if it is an issue.

The location was ideal for exploring the Summer Isles. The first day we headed out to the Achiltibuie loop and the second day to the Drumber loop, stopping both days at the various sights, heading back to Ullapool in the afternoons for a snack and a pint at one of several walkable options nearby. Since we arrived before the season, having a town with open restaurants and a pub in the hotel was a nice end of day option.

Overall, a nice visit. The hotel is not five star, but it certainly has the friendliness, service and character that we enjoy.

I stayed here for 1 night on business , it is a fairly small hotel with 7 rooms .
I had a nice double room overlooking the harbour . I ate in the bar / restraunt , the food was good , however they did stop serving at 8pm as they have live music on a Monday .
The smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on toast for breakfast was excellent .
The service is good and friendly . I would stay here again .

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view

Just home, returned from a whistle stop tour of the highlands, a bit unseasonal, but hey!. Last time we were in Ullapool was 30 years ago, we were trying to retrace visited places, the Argyle was one of them. Delighted to say, it has lost none of its genuine character. Our room was warm, clean, fantastic view over the harbour. We dined in the hotel in the evening and were treated to a fantastic eating experience, local seafood, imaginative presentation, served by a cheery waitress. The Argyle has lost none of its character, a good night was held in the bar, entertainment provided by local people. we had a good nights sleep and awakened fresh in the morning ready for a hearty breakfast. Sorry to leave, and won't leave it 30 years before a return visit.

Room Tip: Seek out local historian and renowned musician Jock McKenzie, he will advise on places of interest a...

I stopped here late on in the season and although they often have theme nights and activities going on in the bar, there wasn't any on my visit.
Never mind the evening by the roaring log fire was very comfy and the welcome was just as warm.
My room had a terrific view over Loch Broom and to sit and watch the dawn was a real treat.
It's only about 300 yards from the ferry terminal so it's ideally placed for anybody needing a stop over to Stornaway.
I'm not a big fan of hotel chains so if you want a small independant hotel run by the owners I would recommend this, I'll certainly stop here again.

Room Tip: Try and get a room on the second floor at the front, facing the Loch.

This great, and welcoming hotel and pub had a beautiful view from my room. The food was really nice, particularly the lamb with rosemary and red wine sauce and potatoes, it was perfectly cooked and the garlic cloves gave a great flavour to the meat. The malt selection was impressive, and I found my room very comfortable.

There was live music in the pub, but it was finished at a reasonable hour, and provided entertainment for what seemed to be most of Ullapool! The room was quiet and despite being above the bar, I was not disturbed!

A lovely stay, great food, proper friendly pub and I will definitely be back...
