“Not meeting expectations”

We all have different priorities when looking for a cottage, in our case, due to some mobility issues we search for properties with parking, a shower, pub/restaurant nearby and wi-fi.
As these are priorities for us I will comment on these first.

Clover Cottage delivered on the very reliable wi-fi and a nearby gastro pub but failed on the other two.
The White Horse was brilliant with a good menu. We also had good meals at the Moorings and The Blakeney Hotel. In all 3 cases I recommend booking, particularly on a Friday and Saturday. If you cannot get in there is always the possibility of getting a table in the lower bar of the White Horse on a first come first served basis (they don’t always tell you this if you try and book and they are full).

Parking:
The access to the ‘secure parking’ had not been maintained and was so overgrown that it could not be used. Part way through our stay some of the foliage was trimmed back but the gap was still extremely tight made worse by a number of pots and planters. Despite our car not being massive (Mercedes B class) we found it really difficult to negotiate this access to reach the allocated parking in the garage, it is not the one you can see in the photo but requires a turn to the right. Anyone expecting to use the secure parking will have difficulty unless driving a “Micro car”. The owner clearly knew this was an issue as the cottage location details they forwarded included details of alternative parking. As it was out of season we managed to park in the closest car park for £3/day – although we had to make sure we were back early each day as by about 7pm it became full.

Shower:
The shower feels like a cupboard in the kitchen, possibly the larder in former years. It is very small with a curtain. There is no light in the shower so the only light is from the over mirror light in the adjoining toilet – too dark and claustrophobic. As there was only my husband and I, we coped by leaving the door to the kitchen open so that we could see what wewere doing. The house bathroom looked as though it had a shower due to the fancy ‘telephone’ style shower attachment on the bath but this is for show only as the hot water system does not have enough pressure.

Better than expected:
The sitting room had decent comfortable furniture, better than we have had in a number of other properties. The television worked well and was a really good size in a sizeable sitting room.
The kitchen was well stocked with plenty of cutlery, crockery and glasses.
The bed was really comfy, again, better than we have often encountered.
Blakeney itself feels very safe and is quite pretty with all the boats and quirky, well maintained cottages – no scruffy neighbours here!

Other Points:
On arrival we were advised by the owner where to collect the key, this proved unnecessary as the cottage was unlocked with the key in the door and the telly on – All a bit odd and made us think there was someone (possibly a burglar) already in the cottage. I felt the need to check every room in case there was someone hiding.
There is clearly a lack of power points in the house as so many things are run from extensions and double adapters. As we have to plug in medical equipment overnight, we are used to bringing extension leads in case sockets are not near to the bed but on this occasion it meant adding to the load on the sockets which was a bit worrying.
The lack of sockets also impacted in the kitchen, as a result the kettle and toaster are under the stairs – I can’t remember how many times I banged my head but there was no alternative location.
The bathroom light has lost its cover, I would have expected the bathroom light would need to be sealed.
The towel rail in the downstairs loo is next to the toilet and gets extremely hot so please take care.
The steps to the main bedroom are uneven in height and directly above the main staircase so any stumble could have dire consequencies.
Whilst the cottage had been cleaned on arrival, I am a real pain when it comes to cobwebs and there were plenty here. Unfortunately I sat in the living room in the armchair with a direct view to the wall light which is behind a dresser and was sporting a massive web – horrific for someone like me who is so fussy! The kettle hadn’t been de-scaled for some time either – hence a chunk fell into my cup.
I did go into the ‘games room’ but as soon as I opened the cellar door the damp musty smell hit me, after a quick look we shut the door and never opened it again.
All in all, this cottage was not ideal for us, although it does depend on your priorities. I also think the previous reviews set our expectations unrealistically high.

Loved this cottage! Stayed for a weekend in Jan with friends and relatives who stayed in other cottages in Blakeney. I was responsible for booking. We have a lovely time. This one has an open fire!! Very Blakeney and right in the centre.
We had a great tie. Blakeney is good in ands out of season.

“An absolute gem”
Reviewed 11 June 2014 for a stay in May 2014

A superb cottage situated in a quiet cul de sac with its own garage. Excellent quality throughout and immaculate. Superb family bathroom together with two very generous sized bedrooms. We loved the cellar with the snooker table and the open fire, soft lighting and wonderful colour scheme made for a truly relaxing long week end. Very close to the quay and pub serving fab Sunday lunches. Huge thank you to the owner who was so helpful when booking. Will definitely be returning.

“Superb Cottage”

We are frequent visitors to Blakeney and stay in this groups of cottages a lot. First time we have tried this one. It has all been newly decorated, new flooring, new beds etc. etc. Lovely. Whoever chose the colours and the furniture has a good eye. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. This cottage is well worth every penny. It has two bathrooms, both spotless. A garage, the first time we have had a garage in Blakeney and also has a huge games room with pool table and lounge with second TV. The children loved it. Lots of space and really near to the quay, so we will be going again.
