Bathroom gasses from septic / sewer odor

Dogs from kennel barking incessantly all night long

Ragged furnishings in bedroom

A very poor experience for us during our 14 day tour of Andalusia Spain. The most pathetic nights sleep in the two week trip - a huge mistake on my left for booking here.

My husband and I were on our way from Madrid to Granada in Spain. We decided to stop along the way, so that we could take our time visiting the Windmills of La Mancha on the way. We booked a night at the Parador in Jaen. A parador is part of a series of hotels and accommodations in usually special places or locations in Spain. This one was in a castle on top perched of a mountain.
I have never stayed in a castle before, so this was very different. Check in was ok. There was some miscommunication about a coupon that we had for breakfast, but it was sorted in the end.
Our room was large with a four poster bed. The bed was comfortable, and it was very quiet, so we slept well. It had a small castle type window in the bedroom area, but we were also shown that it had big doors leading to a large terrace, where there were lounge chairs and a balcony, which afforded you a terrific view of the surrounding area. We regretted only booking for one day as the view was truly spectacular. The bathroom was also large, but dated. It was clean though.
The lounge areas are huge in the Parador, with plenty of seating areas. There is one with knights armour - that was fun. There is also a bar area for drinks, a massive ballroom and the dining room beyond that. Each of these spaces have super high and interesting ceilings. There are a couple outdoor patios too and a pool area, but as we were there in November and it was cold, we did not use these areas.
You can explore the castle area beyond the hotel. It is lit at night, but you have to watch your step a bit, as some areas are dark. It is all safe though, and if you walk to the very end, you come to a very large white cross. From there you have a view of the Jaen cathedral and the city.
There is a museum in the castle that there is an admission fee for, but we did not have time for this.
This was a fun and interesting place to stay. I would recommend more that one night to get the full experience of what it has to offer. Well recommended.

the location is extremely impressive and underlined by the perfect service of the Parador and its team.
there is practically nothing which should be improved, only the opening times for the dinner are too late for non-spanish peaople.

Situated in a mountain peak overlooking the city of Jaén, the hotel is part of the state-owned Paradores network of hotels. This particular hotel is a converted former castle dating from the Middle Ages. Like all the Paradores I have visited, it offers great value for money, with spotlessly clean rooms, if a bit on the rustic side. The service was friendly, yet very professional. I had dinner at the hotel, and the food was hearty but good, with large servings. The cheese tart I had for dessert deserves special mention. What really stands out for me in all the Paradores I have visited, with Jaén being no exception, is the quality of the breakfast buffet. It outshines anything I have had in most of the five star hotels I have stayed in. The orange juice is always freshly squeezed, the pastries are locally made, and always include traditional, artisanal pastries and breads, the fruit is always locally sourced, and the hams, sausages and “chorizos” are the best in the world, in my opinion. The only reason I don’t give the Parador in Jaén a five star rating is because the rooms are starting to show some wear and tear. But if you’re visiting the beautiful and historic city of Jaén, the Parador is the place to stay.

We loved our stay in this castle Parador in mid October. Our room, 40, was comfortable, spacious and had all the expected amenities. The balcony was great to relax on as it had wonderful views over the hills. Staff were friendly and helpful especially at reception. The bar man was great, even though he was usually rushed off his feet trying to serve people in three different areas. We decided that the wonderful restaurant setting was something we wanted to experience. We had delicious dishes, and found the 35 euro price for a three course meal in such a settling to be very reasonable. The service was a little slow, but we were quick to forgive that when we could see how the four servers were rushing. It is a vast dining hall and the space between tables is generous, so the wait staff really worked hard the entire evening and still managed to be friendly and charming. Fabulous location, wonderful common areas, generously sized rooms, quiet even with the balcony door open at night with just some barking dogs in the distance and lovely, hard working staff. Highly recommend.
