“The (really) Wild Atlantic Way”
Review of Diamond Hill

Diamond Hill
Reviewed 6 April 2018 via mobile

I enjoyed a lovely visit from Carraroe to Connemara National Park. The drive from Recess to Letterfrack is so atmospheric in any weather if you like sheep wandering the boreens!

The facilities and welcome at the National Park Centre are great. Didn't check out the museum but heard straight for Diamond Hill with my 7 year old daughter. Wear decent footwear as this walk is steep in places. No need to worry about the bog as the wooden platforms raised above the big protect the ecosystem and walkers alike.

Although we didn't quite get to the top - it was freezing and violently windy - there were fantastic views the whole way up of West and South coasts of Galway, the islands and peaks.

We met some lovely Connemara ponies on the way back down which my daughter greatly enjoyed too.

As far as I'm concerned, this is a mountain, not a hill. Be mindful of the wind conditions before going all the way up, we were nearly blown from the summit!

It’s a hidden gem that is the perfect active day out for anyone who appreciates nature. It’s well maintained, easy to navigate and great underfoot. There’s a short medium and long loop to choose from so it caters for all ages/abilities. The full loop take around 2hours going at casual pace. The path varies from gravel, stone steps and even raised wooden walkways that hover above the bog. If you’re lucky to do this on a clear day the views over the bay are breathtaking! It’s a must see!

This is a great (but bracing walk) on well marked/maintained and signposted paths. It's more challenging than I'd anticipated, but we walked it in winter when it was very windy and I suspect that in more clement conditions, it's a little easier. It's a great day to pass a few hours and the kids (we'd five with us) really enjoyed it.
