We stayed here 2 nights at the end of our 9 day trip to Iceland. If we knew how lovely this cabin was going to be we would have booked for longer. Its a great location for many day trips. Its nestled in the trees overlooking a lake. Its very quiet and private and relaxing yet not far from town and scenery. There were only two of us staying but plenty of room to come back with family and friends. The view of the stars and northern lights from the hot tub was great. Kristinn was a good host. We arrived late and his instructions and guide book very easy to understand and appreciated. We left wishing we had spent more time at Kristinn’s home. Thanks for the hospitality and great recommendations!
We wanted to view Iceland without starting each day in a city hotel, and without the long commute to and from Reykjavik each day. Kristinn Karl's house was the perfect location for us. We traveled as a party of five, with two couple and one young adult, and the house fit us perfectly. Everyone had their own bedroom, with two bathrooms, a good kitchen, and an wonderful hot tub that we used every night! The location is roughly 10 minutes from Kerid crater, 15 minutes from Selfoss, and 30 minutes from the Golden Circle attractions. It also sits in an isolated area with very little light pollution, so we were able to see the northern lights just by walking outside the house, amazing! Kristinn Karl provided an outstanding guidebook of the area, which we utilized to help plan the days, and includes both the attractions, grocery locations, and restaurant recommendations. It was the perfect place to stay and definitely enhanced our Iceland experience!
This is a perfect place to stay if you don't want to stay in the city and want to explore the countryside near the golden circle! I stayed with my husband and 2 adult children, but would be great for several couples or a family with younger children also. Kristinn was a great host and easy to reach if .you had any questions. When we booked he sent us a booklet with lots of great information about restaurants and things to do in the area, along with directions and time estimates for driving. The cottage is very close to Gulfoss falls, Geysir, Kerið and Þingvellir national park. The falls are amazing and we really enjoyed walking around the Kerið crater lake. We were able to do a hike on the Solheimajokull glacier (which was awesome) and we really loved the black sand beach near Vic.
As for the cottage itself it is everything you could want in a vacation home. There are 3 bedrooms and 2 baths, a small but usable kitchen, we loved the hot tub that you fill with natural geothermal water and the views are amazing! There are also several small hiking trails right near the cottage that we enjoyed also. We were here late May to early June, so it never really got dark at night - just to the point of dusk. The sunset at night was beautiful!
