A fantastic place to stay

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 7 Oct 2013
I visited Sinna Dorai's Bungalow with a group in July 2013.I had particularly gone to photograph the Lion Tailed Macaque. Sujatha runs the bungalow in a highly efficient manner. She would keep in contact at each stage before & during my stay to inquire about our requirements. The sightings of the LTMs were enabled effectively by keeping in touch with the locals and all arrangements made with care and to our comfort. The rooms were clean, the food good and the atmosphere electric.I highly recommend this place for any one wanting a good quiet holiday.Well done Sinna Dorai.

An assistant managers bungalow, redone to look like it was run and used decades ago... atop a small hill, lush green tea gardens on 3 sides and slight dip to a stream and rain forest on the fourth.... so big deal, someone says.... top this then... Valparai is a tea valley so what you see from Sinna Dorai is all at the hill, and in nicely nested amongst the clouds, the rain forest brings wild life into the tea gardens - Indian Gaur, barking deer, Sambar, elephants, wild dogs, and leopards (get in the jeep at night and just drive around and you'll see a different world), a bevvy of birds - the flameback woodpecker, and whooshing winged great hornbill (a respectable pleasure), hummingbirds even... the sun pours into the valley each morning from behind the bungalow and lights up the rising cooking fire smoke from several villagelets where the 100s of tea-workers live.... this may have been how parts of heaven would be imagined.

the bungalow itself is dated outside with modern bathrooms and wonderfully hosted by the caretakers. Excellent food was served with each meal. they even have a conference room for the perfect business retreat. take in a visit to Sholayar Dam, the Tea Factory, stop at 9th hair-pin to see the rare Nilgiri Ibex, or just read a book, listen to music and walk....

being just a few hours from Coimbatore, its with reach for a weekend trip even from Bangalore...

we have made plans to go back for sure...

Room tip: there are 2 separate behind the conf center, these offer the best view

Just back from a great holiday at valparai. We decided on valparai after lot of thought process on where to go for our anniversary.
The main reason we were a little skeptical was the distance from bangalore but the drive was worth it.
We left bangalore around 5:30 am and reached pollachi by 12:30 pm.
Sujatha, our host followed up with us through out to ensure we did not miss our route.
We stopped at pollachi for lunch and left for valparai around 1:30 pm.
The distance is around 65kms and we stopped enroute at Aliyar dam. Nothing much to do there. The view is amazing but need not spend lot of time there.

We did lot of photo stops on our way to valparai and reach by 4:30 pm.
As soon as we reached the place we had our snacks and tea and settled down in our room.
Rest of the evening was spent admiring the beauty of the location.
As it was our anniv they had made a beautiful arrangement of candles and flowers with a cake.
They also made our dinner into special candle light dinner.

Next day early morning Muruguan (assigned to help us out while we were there) took us out for bird watching. we missed the malabar hornbill just by few mins.
We did manage to glimpse woodpecker, kingfisher, shrek and few other birds.
Back in the bunglow we had our breakfast which was a simple and delicious affair.
We freshened up and left for Nirar dam. Drive is very scenic and the dam location is also amazing.

Next day we left for athirapally again with Murugan and we got a packed lunch. drive was totally unique experience. We reached athirapally by 12:30 pm and it started raining heavily.
But still we managed to see the falls and had our lunch on the way back in the middle of the forest with Murugan taking up the role of butler. serving us a delicious lunch of lemon rice, curd rice, potato porial and kesari.

Do not miss the nigh safari as well, it will be your own vehicle but that adds to the excitement as you will be driving.

Murugan is very knowledgeable about local flora and fauna and a great companion to have with all his exciting stories of sightings.

Hospitality is at its best, food is very homely and tasty and rest of the staff are always pleasant and smiling.

Rooms are very bug and spacious. only thing i would have added is a bit of comfortable seating inside the room apart from just the bed. specially for those who would just like to laze around.

all in all a great vacation. Pics to follow soon

After hearing a lot from my friends about this place called "Valparai", I finally decided to go there. I just relied on Trip advisor’s reviews in selecting Sinna Dorai's Bungalow. The booking was smooth and locating the place was easy, Thanks to Sujatha for keeping touch regularly and guiding me to this place. As soon as we reached the Bungalow, I understood I didn’t make any mistake in choosing this place. Spacious clean rooms, misty surroundings and excellent service makes this place the best of the ones I have been to till date. One would take at least half a day to go thru every room and take a look the surroundings. I was spellbound by the service provided. I enjoyed being pampered and treated with utmost class. The food was fabulous. Be it the Italian soups or the south Indian varieties, they are simply mouthwatering. Special mention about the chef and his expertise in cooking various dishes right from soups to deserts. The table for every meal was set with perfection and with different crockery set every meal. I cannot restrain myself from appreciating Sujatha for maintaining the Bungalow exceptionally well and training the staff to give guests a complete colonial treatment. The location of the bungalow is very good. We have stayed for 2 nights and we didn’t want to move out of the bungalow premises except for a walk/trek in the adjacent tea estate. I would recommend people not to plan to go to any sightseeing nearby as this place is meant to relax by just enjoying the bungalow. Awesome place I would definitely want to visit again.

Room tip: If preferring privacy, one can book the rooms situated below the main bangalow. But one needs to get up the hill (20-30 steps) to the bangalow to have food or tea as the food is served only in the dining hall located in the main building.

After contemplating for two years, we finally visited this misty beautiful little tea town called Valparai. We drove up the hill and braved the 40 hair bend drives telephonically guided by Sujatha of Sinna dorai bungalows. When we finally reached the bungalow we slowly started falling in love with this place.
The bungalow is beautifully restored to the highest standards with classic touch. It is situated on top of the hill so the view is spectacular. Surrounded by beautiful garden of flowers and trees. The cottages are extremely comfortable with most modern facilities. It took me one full day to go thru every room of the bungalow to admire the beautiful paintings, restored furnitures, trophies etc. The library is stocked with pre-independence books, news papers and periodicals.
While sipping a hot cuppa and snacks during the lovely monsoon afternoon, I totally enjoyed reading and resting there, it was a bliss. The food was very fresh and hygenic, generally south-indian with many varieties. The table for every meal was set with perfection and with different crockery set every meal.
The staff in the bungalow are very well trained, extremely professional. Sujatha the caretaker/ manager - was very helpful, a pleasing personality. We had a marvelous three days trekking around, even had an encounter with a bison while trekking a hill, resting in beautiful hill side, just enjoying the bungalow.
When you go to Valparai and stay in this bungalow my advice is to just enjoy the surrounding, the bungalow and the weather. Do not go 'sight seeing' to the near by waterfalls etc which will kill your one full day. Just relax and enjoy the beautiful place and people !

It is not an easy place to get to, but totally worth the effort. We booked well before and correspondence with Sujatha was always prompt and courteous. She arranged for a driver to pick us up from Coimbatore and again take us through to Tirapur a few days later. On arrival we were offered iced tea, and soon after had a delicious cup of English style tea with home made biscuits. The property itself is breathtaking, and the accommodation and meals totally indulgent without being showy. The bungalows are beautifully equipped and spacious. The living areas of the main house are fascinating, and I enjoyed getting a feel for what it might have been like living there. All of the staff are simply efficient and friendly. I had my washing dried for me! The feel is one of peace and tranquility, and two days there does not do it justice. You really should relax there and unwind properly. Sujatha arranged for a visit to a tea factory, and the night safari was on offer as well. Food was plentiful and varied and delicious. The views of the tea plantations and the villages in the valleys both in the day and at night are splendid.
