Owner description: On July 1, 1876, the first seven inmates entered the Territorial Prison at Yuma and were locked into the new cells they had built themselves. Today at Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park walk through the actual strap iron cells and solitary chamber of Arizona Territory’s first prison. Now a museum, the prison houses photographs and colorful exhibits of those who once “involuntarily” stayed there and the harsh life they had to endure.

Visited the prison when in Yuma. Very interesting. We found it especially interesting to see that a women had been incarcerated for rape. How does that happen??? After we returned home we watched the movie 3 10 to Yuma. It didn’t really show the prison, but was a fun look at life in that area at the time.

Our tour was fantastic! Our docent was very knowledgable about the history of the prison. The state of Arizona and city of Yuma have done a great job restoring the prison with lots of interesting displays. Definitely worth a stop! There is a small entry fee.

Even if you don't go in check out the area outside the prison for some great history information! Check out all the famous people that spent a lot of years locked up!

The old prison is a must see. The surrounding landscape is near the Colorado river. Real informative tours available.

We were staying over in Yuma, and had heard about the prison, so we decided to check it out. After paying the fee, we were given a map and set off to self explore. There is a lot of interesting information about the prison, and some of the famous prisoners (both men and women) who were kept there. The trains running along on a regular basis also made it interesting. A bonus for us was that there was a Canadian group of bagpipers playing in the guard tower while we were there! Overall, it's a neat place to check out if you find yourself in Yuma and you have about an hour.
