“Much better than expected”
Reviewed 3 April 2012

My partner and I spent 3 nights at the Mikaso Hotel in San Pedro last week. The hotel had expanded since I had last seen it 2 years ago. I remember it looking very "unfinished" back in 2010 so it was a pleasant surprise to arrive at a pretty nice place for a 2 star hotel.

The rooms are basic - no frills there. Two bath towels - that's it. No end tables or TV. However, the beds were very comfortable and the duvets must have come from North America and they were fabulous. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The facilities are much better than expected.

Breakfast at the hotel was great and the cook Sandra even came in early our first morning as we had to make an early, early appointment in a village across the lake. It is the first time my partner has had "eggs easy over" that actually were done right. Prices are really affordable - gin and tonics for $2, a wonderful breakfast for $4!

The terrace is wonderful for suntanning and relaxing. Umbrellas on the tables, 2 jacuzzis, pool table, hammock and the best view of the lake. We could hear the ducks "running" across the lake as they moved out of the way of the local fishermen. I thought it would be noisy as it appeals to a younger crowd than us but it was quiet at night and only got noisy around 8 in the morning which is very decent.

We loved the place, thought the ambience was fabulous and would go back in a heartbeat. We just hope the lake doesn't keep rising or Mikaso will find themself "in" the lake instead of right "on" the lake. Definitely convenient and worth checking out for the price.

I recently stayed at the Hotel Mikaso for three nights. The hotel is simple, but absolutely beautiful and situated right next to Lake Atitlan. If the lake is rough it sounds like you're staying at a hotel on the beach. Our room was small but clean, safe and quiet. The hotel food was great and reasonably priced. Best of all, the staff were great! Laurance helped us set up two activities prior to arriving in San Pedro, and both activities were reasonably priced and ended up being great experiences (lake tour and sunrise on Indian Nose). The upstairs restaurant/balcony is a great space, perfect for a meal or a cup of coffee, and the place you'll need to go to take advantage of the free wifi.

The rooms don't have phones or TV's, which I thought was great. Wifi only works upstairs, which again, was fine with me. The hotel provided soap, but no shampoo. We had a room with an electronic water heater in the shower, which worked just fine. Just keep in mind that you may have to alter the water pressure to keep the water hot at all times. Also, they only accept cash.

All in all I would highly recommend Hotel Mikaso, in addition to taking advantage of the activities that the hotel can schedule. Both of our activities utilized locals, so you're investing in the local economy.

Last, make sure you visist Santiago Atitlan while you're staying at the lake. It was my favorite place on the lake.

What a wonderful time we had this fall at the Mikaso hotel. We arranged a few tours with the very cool people who helped run the hotel and had a great time. We got access to a local shaman, watched the sun rise from the Indian Nose, and enjoyed some good coffee at the hotel restaurant. Allow yourself at least a full morning to just enjoy your coffee, a good book, and the view at the hotel restaurant. The food is very good too-they serve authentic Putin which very much pleased the Canadians :)

Keep in mind that San pedro is a much more relaxed town than some of the others around the lake, you won't find luxury accomadations here--which is pretty much the point! This place was really perfect for what we wanted - a relaxing place with a great view that provided easy access to the local sites and people.

Bonus-there are tons of hammocks, comfy couches, and 2 HOT TUBS on the roof to enjoy. We went during the low season and pretty much had the place to ourselves however I imagine it is very fun when it is full.

If you want to do San Pedro I would definitely stay here!

The entrance into to the Mikaso Hotel will leave you thinking you have made a terrible mistake. You follow a dirt path with the smell of burning garbage, which leads you to a concrete sidewalk and the entrance to the hotel. There was no one in the reception area...never was our entire stay. We rang a buzzer and someone showed up and told us to come to the third floor restaurant to check in. As I was walking across the lobby I tripped on an invisible, unmarked step and suffered a hard fall which broke my glasses and gave me a severe knock on the head. Not a good beginning to our stay. After I recovered, we were shown to our room, which had a great view of the lake. The bed was not comfortable and the pillows were small and lumpy. When I asked the housekeeper for extra pillows, she told me they had no more. There was mildew in the shower and on the shower curtain. Otherwise, the room seemed acceptable for the price of $35/night. We had dinner in the restaurant and the food was very good. Later in the evening, we returned to the restaurant in order to get a wi-fi signal to listen to a special NCAA basketball game. There was a small crowd at the bar across the room from us and along with some of the staff they were making so much noise we could not hear our game. I complained and was given a rude response from a man who later identified himself as the owner of the hotel. Some cross words were spoken. We considered moving to another hotel, but we had to prepay for our three-day stay and doubted that they would refund our money. The remaining days were uneventful. The hotel owner was pleasant and we ate in the hotel restaurant several times with no other complaints. After we requested it, the owner did put some reflecting tape on the invisible step and on another step. All in all, we would not choose the Mikaso Hotel again.

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a view. It will make up for the other shortcomings.
