We stayed for 3 nights and enjoyed the perfectly furnished and equipped house and the nice and quiet surroundings. But the difference really made Nicole and her husband who both were incredibly helpful with everything. Thank you again!
We (2 couples) stayed 3 nights at this wonderful place in Drake Bay. The location was in town and I was a little worried that it would be noisy and busy. But it was quite the opposite. It felt so secluded and private and very safe. The balconies faced a forested ravine and sitting out there watching the wildlife was one of our favourite things to do. Monkeys and many species of birds visited the trees just near the house. A resident sloth and her baby were close enough to observe. It felt like we were out in the jungle but we were a 10 minute walk to the store for groceries and there were many restaurants close by as well.
The house itself had everything you would need for a comfortable stay. We were impressed with the attention to detail. Hooks on the walls for all of our towels, everything you would need in the kitchen, fans in every room to keep us cool, books of information about the area, cooler bags to take on outings for food, cards and board games and even sarongs to wear or use at the beach if needed. The bedrooms are upstairs and so they catch a nice breeze and were very comfortable. Also having them away from the kitchen and living area made it handy for everyone to do there thing, or go to sleep on their own time.
Nichole sent me many emails answering all of my questions about boat transfers, travel options, tours etc. We received all of the information we needed for a relaxing stay.
Mario was amazing. We was always around to help us out with any requests. He brought us binoculars since we forgot to bring our own and pointed us in the right direction for our tours and activities.
Our next trip back to Drake Bay will definitely include a stay on Mango st Casona.
Nichole and Mario thanks for a great time in Drake Bay.
We stayed our first two weeks at the Casita (located on the same property) and our third week here at the Casona. Both places are very clean, comfortable and secure. However, the Casona has two decks (upper and lower) that give a fantastic view of the forest behind where we watched white-faced and howler monkeys, a sloth and a Tyra as well as Motmots, Trogons and a variety of birds both in the forest and in the garden out front. Mario and Nichole are excellent hosts and can arrange any tours (private or group) as they know everyone! Less than ten minutes walk to the beach, restaurants and grocery stores.
I stayed at the Casona for 8 days in the middle of April with 2 of my friends to experience all that Drake Bay had to offer. Prior to our arrival, I had never been to Costa Rica before, but did extensive research, and decided that the Osa Peninsula afforded the best opportunity to have a real jungle experience. When deciding what tours I was interested in doing, the proximity of Drake Bay to all the tour operators lead me to look for a place to stay nearby. Mango St Casona did not disappoint. It was within a 5 minute walk to the small town where the grocery stores are, the restaurants, and all the tour operators. We did not need to rent a car.
There are an abundance of things to do in Drake Bay, and all the tours Nichole and Mario booked for us were fantastic! We quickly learned that we only trusted what they recommended. We saw other travelers getting kicked out of Corcovado National Park because of their tour guides doing things that were against regulations. We were fortunate that all of our guides were excellent, and we felt that we got the most for our money out of all our excursions. Nichole handled the booking of the casona, setting up most of our tours prior to our arrival, and answered a countless amount of e-mails I sent her regarding our stay. She also greeted us, showed us around the house, and gave us tips on our first day there. After that Mario handled the rest of our trip, and I cannot say enough great things about him. He walked us to ALL of our excursions, even at 6:00 am! He even booked a private charter boat for us on our last day there, came on the boat with us, and walked us through the jungle to one of our tours to ensure everything went just as it should. He was also always close by the house, so if we had any questions we could always find him. One day I even asked him if there were any coconuts around the property and he immediately stopped what he was doing, and within a few minutes appeared with 4 coconuts and started chopping them open for us! He found one on the beach on our last day and broke that one open for us too. I also suspect that he cleaned the house for us daily. I really just cannot say enough great things about the kindness and attentiveness he displayed for his guests.
The house was clean, and bottled water was provided for us as it is not advisable to drink the tap water. We enjoyed sitting out on the 2 decks of the house to watch for animals in the garden, but were surprised that we only saw monkeys come to eat bananas once. However, there are dogs all over Drake Bay, and one of the locals mentioned to us that the dogs tend to scare the animals away, so I don't know if that was a factor. We did see many animals on all of our tours though, so we did not feel disappointed. We also really liked having a house rental instead of a hotel, as we made most of our breakfasts and lunches. Most of our tours started early, as it gets extremely hot there, and we would not have had time to go out to breakfast, and there was nowhere to buy lunch when we were out and about. We also enjoyed grilling, playing cards, and reading the books that were at the house.
As Costa Rica is considered one of the most eco friendly countries, naturally there was no air conditioning at the casona or anywhere in Drake Bay. As it had snowed at home the day before making our trip, we were struggling to adjust to the drastic climate change. Some things we thought could have helped improve the air circulation through the house would have been screened in doors, so we could have let the doors open when we were there, or more powerful fans to move the air around. In addition, screened in bathrooms would have added more comfort, as there were often small bees or other insects flying around me as I was trying to shower or brush my teeth, regardless if I left the lights off.
All in all it was a wonderful trip, and I truly appreciate everything Nichole and Mario did for us. I already miss Drake Bay!
