there are some very nice trails to hike and one you make it right next to the airport where you can watch planes land and take off

This is one of those MUST VISIT spots in Sedona. Right off of 89A on your way up to the regional airport is the Mesa where tourists and locals alike gather to watch the sunset. It's quite a social event with people milling all around the Mesa and look-out pinnacle jockeying for a birds eye view of the evolving red color on the rocks as the sun goes down. You just park along the roadside or in the large parking lot across from the look-out. It's one of the best places to get a photo of the town & red rock panorama. Just don't get tripped up by someone's tripod (these people are serious as a heart attack with their mega long lenses and may throw you over the cliff if you get in their way)! I remember what it used to be like up on the Mesa back in the 1980's (sometimes alone on the Mesa @ sundown)...It's an entirely different scene now and you can rarely avoid a crowd. The world has caught on to the splendor of Sedona and the once quaint unassuming little 'Old West' town has become the playground for the rich, lost souls, or both....

You won't be alone, but you will see a fine sunset from the vista area near the top of Airport mesa. An amazing number of people leave once the sun clears the horizon - maybe unaware that the sky turns more and more interesting as the rays play themselves out on the clouds. Arizona: a land of amazing sunsets.

We loved this hike and were a bit surprised how long it took. About 3 hours for us. I have a bad ankle and feel like I can manage well, however some places are more uneven and loose dirt/rock. Definitely take 2 water bottles per person and a little snack.

We paid the $3 to park at the Airport Overlook and hiked the trail to the Airport Mesa. The views of Sedona from this height were spectacular! The trail was well-marked and hugged the side of the mountain until we reached the Airport Mesa where the strongest vortex in Sedona is rumored to be. We had a great excursion here and will always remember the sights. We also met some really friendly people along the way. I felt like it was more locals than tourists. We truly enjoyed it!
