“Great Value, Great People”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 April 2012

I have to admit I was a bit hesitate about staying here after reading some of the previous reviews. We stayed in the 9000 section of the hotel which is behind the convention center part. I'd recommend this if you want something quiet where you won't get noise from the front parking area or pools. Yes, I said pools...a great thing for those of us who only wanted to relax and get some sun.
Every staff member that we encountered walking the property was friendly and always acknowledged us.
We had a two queen room and the room itself was very large and I liked that every room has either a patio or balcony. Our view happened to be of the basketball and tennis court but it was nice to be able to go outside and sit on the patio in the morning to have coffee and relax. I assume that we had a room that had already been renovated since the bedding looked new...and the bed was SO comfortable!
The breakfast buffet is good and it's nice that you can order eggs anyway you like them as part of that. Other than that we mostly just had drinks while laying by the pool.

The only negative thing that comes to mind is the fact that the toilets are VERY loud when flushed. I have no idea if it was the rooms next to us or above us but every time someone flushed a toilet in the middle of the night I woke up....I am a light sleeper but still, if there are more renovations to be done I hope this is something they can address.

The location is great and I can't wait to book my next trip back.

Room Tip: Might want to stay on the second level...maybe not so much noise from flushing toilets that way.

This hotel is clean, the rooms beautiful, and a half decent gym. (though finding the gym is a bit of a treasure hunt, it's very well hidden). I didn't care for the lounge, the server was definitely challenged in his job. The breakfast buffet was great , you need to ask for made to order eggs of you don't want to eat the gross scrambled eggs. But overall a nice experience.

Thank you for being our guest and for this positive review. We will follow up with the service provided in our lounge although it would help if you could provide us with a few more details. Our guests love our Doubletree by Hilton Breakfast Buffet and see a real value in fresh to order eggs and omelets. Hope you will return again soon.

The good:
The property grounds are beautiful and well maintained. We were fortunate to be there when all of the landscaped vegetation was blooming, including the cacti. You could smell the sweetness of the blooms in the morning and evenings and it was visually beautiful. The grounds were manicured and sculpted - really well done.
We were there on business and had several functions were food and drink were provided by the resort - both in cocktail party and proper dinner form. The chef and staff that prepared the food had real attention to detail and produced some very tasty and very visually appealing food. The light touch with seasonings and herbs was well done. Table presentation wasn't "spectacular", but the staff kept the areas very clean and well stocked with hot, fresh foods and all other manner of snacks. Our main dinner was a buffet (which I am usually not a fan of) but again, the food was well done, not dry and maintained at the proper temperature. Their pastry chef is also to be noted - well done.
The facilities for our meetings were spacious and well tended by the staff.
Each staff member we interacted with - from the various managers/coordinators to the front desk to even the people tending the landscaping - were very friendly and accommodating.
The location is good, although in Scottsdale summer heat it will definitely be a hot walk to Old Town Scottsdale. That having been said, lots of shopping, restaurants and nightlife are within easy walking distance of the property.
The pools with the cabanas and little mini-bars were nice. But there were too few chairs for all of the guests.
What wasn't good:
Unfortunately, we encountered one bad aspect of this resort that we cannot look past as travelers - paper thin walls in the rooms. Other guests we shared a wall with were not being loud. Through the walls we could clearly hear normally pitched conversations, sneezes, coughs and toilet flushes that sounded like a jumbo jet taking off. When guests would be walking by outside in hard heeled shoes or heels, we could clearly hear the 'clop clop' of their steps and murmurs of their conversations. We had a few late nights and were worried about waking other guests when we returned to the room.
Our room, upon check-in, was dirty. The room had a musty smell and appeared to not have been used recently. The thermostat was set to 50 degrees and the AC was pumping out 80 degree room temperature air. The carpet was not laid down properly and had loose spots and wrinkles in it that were just right for catching the toe of a sandal and giving us a little trip. The toilet was filthy with rings in it and black....something....near the upper rim. The fan grate in the bathroom was so dusty it looked furry. The tub drain was extremely slow and you showered in about 4 inches of standing water that took about 10 minutes to completely drain. The tub also had a ring and the floor around the toilet was spotted from, well, we'd rather not speculate. Subsequent daily room cleanings did not seem to extend to the bathroom, although the gunk was clearly visible. I have no doubt that the room cleanliness issue could have been resolved with a second phone call to the front desk. We don't like to complain and had hoped it would get addressed in subsequent daily room cleanings.
When we did call the front desk about 10:30pm to get the AC fixed, the maintenance person arrived within 10 minutes, climbed into the unit crawl space, flipped a switch, adjusted the vent so it pointed downward (not at the ceiling like it was) and we had blissfully cold air. While the situation was resolved quickly and to our satisfaction, we thought this shouldn't have been an issue since this should have been done prior to our arrival. After traveling all day, walking into a warm, musty room was a downer.
The property is very spread out, so if you need to go back to your room in the afternoon (while wearing a sportcoat), it gets a little warm.
No wi-fi on the property except for a network named 'restaurant' you can access in the lobby (but not much further out). We view this as a modern amenity for a property marketing its self at this caliber.
Good service but they dropped the ball on a few items that should be SOP for a resort property.

Room Tip: Try and get a second floor room

In looking back, I just noticed that the response I provided back when I first read your review was not shown and you were still waiting. I apologize for this and hope it is not too late to respond. First, thank you for being with us and for this feedback of your stay, both the good and the bad. We have passed on your compliments to those responsible and have addressed the issues you expressed to those accountable, especially for the issues you experienced in your guest room. We are also moving forward in upgrading our HSIA to a wireless solution with greater bandwidth and are working on ways to improve the soundproofing throughout the property. We do hope that you will give us another opportunity to enjoy the good and to see that the bad has been addressed and is now better.

The grounds were really lovely- flowers and cactus everywhere. Two very nice pools. My room was on the bottom floor- towards the back of the resort. I think they called it a premium view. I had a very nice patio with two chairs and a table that looked out onto a little green area with palm trees and there were beautiful flowers all around. It was clean and quiet. I was charged for Internet in my room which was a drag. The staff was super nice all around. The buffet in the main restaurant was pretty good. You can sit outside with a pool view which was lovely until a bird [--] on my purse. I'd recommend this hotel.

I was recently at the hotel for a conference. The convention rooms were not very well controlled tempeture wise but the staff at the hotel made up for the cold meetings durning the day. I stayed for 7 days and felt like part of the group on the first day. I want to recognize the banquet staff members Siham and doug. Siham has a brilliant smile and a pleasent hello at every meal attended. She brightened by day and evenings. Doug was out bar tender in the evenings and was so cheerful and fun. At the restaurant the male evening manager was engaging and fun as well as the best waitress I have had,Rebecca. I enjoyed them both went eating alone or with a group.
My overall stay was outstanding despite the cold conference rooms and the lack of afternoon snack at the meeting. BUT! I could always rely on that warm wonderful cookie!

Thank you for being with us and for this "wonderful" review. We particularly liked that you would compliment our staff by name so that they can properly be recognized for their efforts. We will follow up on the meeting room temperatures as there is a tendency, with the heat of Arizona, to overcorrect accounting for the daytime temperatures outside and for the number of guests in the meeting room. However, we should be monitoring and reacting better and quicker if the room gets too chilly.
