We go to the Valley of the Sun each March for Spring Training. We are there usually over two weeks, and need a diversion that is not baseball. Not that there is anything wrong with baseball.

We have made Turf Paradise a place we visit once a spring. Located in North Phoenix, it is easily accessible by freeway. Parking is free. Admission is $2 if you don't have a free admission coupon. Lots of race tracks are kind of sleezy, not Turf Paradise. Clean, well-kept, family friendly, and lots or room to move around. We usually head upstairs and sit in the grandstand in a group. Tellers are friendly, and helpful, as we bring new folks each visit. Also from up top you have a great view of the desert mountains.

You can choose your level of betting, most of our crew does $5 or less per race, or not bet at all and just enjoy watching the horses run.

It is a great day out, and part of our Spring Training ritual.

This was a fun day of watching races. I am not sure what people expect when they go to a horse race but this place was pretty typical of others around the country if not better. It is just like the race track in Baltimore where the preakness is held every year. Food is very casual but good. The chocolate cake and chili dogs were both great! Drinks are very weak though. I had 4 makers marks and not even a slight buz.

With all of the OTB options in the Valley of the Sun, it is a wonder that anyone bothers to actually come to the track anymore. Mediocre races, but in essence being able to bet on any active track in North America, makes a day at races appealing. No admission fee is attractive. Waiting attendants in reserved area (no fee) are pleasant and attentive and food is good. We love the Reuben. Attendance is scarce. Recommend going before this becomes a pleasant memory.

Had a fun day learning about horse racing and betting while enjoying a wonderful buffet. We were booked in a private room and buffet which gave us access to the veranda...the best of both worlds, air conditioned comfort between races and yet we could stand outside to watch each race! The alternative races, camels, zebras and ostruches provided more entertainment! The animals were treated humanely with a vet on side at all times! A great entertaining day.

We are just visiting, but thought it might be fun to go to the track. It just so happened to be a free day inside where it was cool, 95 outside. Nice set up. We didn't have lunch, but everything looked good and prices too. We had a drink and stayed for 6 races. You sit at the tables with computer and can enjoy it right there. They race both on the dirt and turf track.
