La Cantera Boutique Hotel
Ranked #19 of 70 Hotels in El Calafate
Reviewed 3 October 2017 via mobile

When I decided to go to El Calafate (to be at Perito Moreno Glacier Park) and El Chalten (to get a glimpse of Mount Fitz Roy), I needed to book a hotel for my 3 night-accommodation. And from the day I started sending emails for my queries, I have to mention AJ, Georgina and Alejandro to commend them for providing very quick response to all my questions. They've even booked my transportation (airport pick up and drop off with cost similar to regular taxi), and excursions (to Perito Moreno Glacier Park and El Chalten) with very affordable rates - I didn't notice I was booking them through a hotel.

When I arrived at the airport, the driver with my name picked me up and drove to La Cantera Hotel in less than 20 minutes.

The location of La Cantera is a little uphill but I think it's great as I had the best view of Lago Argentino! The hotel is also a 3 minute-walk away from a huge supermarket where I bought the things I need for my excursion (extra drinks, food etc.). Although a bit distant from the main road where most restaurants are, La Cantera provides shuttle service for dinner time for their guests which was also offered to me, however, I chose to eat in their restaurant for dinner, and wow, I get to taste the best and most fork-tender osobuco dish that I had in a long while! I couldn't help it and requested the wait staff and receptionist Gabriela to tell the chef that his osobuco was perfecto! It was really so delicious! I thank Georgina, the other receptionist for recommending me that dish for dinner! The price was also affordable too! Even cheaper I guess from most restaurants in El Calafate. A wine glass only cost me 80+ Argentinian pesos (ARS), and the osobuco dish for less than 200 ARS.

Breakfast buffet was satisfying too! Fresh drinks, coffee, tea! Eggs and some sweet pastries and cakes! Really wow! The wait staff was also friendly and can speak English well!

I was provided a big room with a view of the lake and snowcapped mountains! The toilet and bath was huge too!

What I love the best is their lounge or lobby, with glass panels to view Lago Argentino. Very relaxing specially sunrise and sunset!

Wifi access in entire hotel was fast and free as well (included in the room package).

I give my two thumbs up for Hotel La Cantera in El Calafate!

They made my stay in Patagonia very warm despite the cold weather outside!

We stayed at La Cantera last November. The service was excellent. Staff members made sure we were booked on all of our tours. We had left a jacket at the airport on the plane -- and they helped us get the jacket back! Breakfast in the morning was also excellent and extensive. And you can order packed lunches for day outings. The room was comfortable and large. Sometimes it felt difficult to put on the heat. The hotel is up on a hill from the town. They can offer a car to drive you into town in the evenings. That's the only thing it's a little bit of a hike to go down for the day (coming back up to the hotel), probably a 15 minute walk. Otherwise everything was great

We chose this hotel as it was easy walking down into town, and they offered a free taxi return at night. Room was small but adequate, very warm ( we had to turn off most heating), and the breakfast was fine. Nice bed. Downside was restaurant lacked any atmosphere (we dined there after a long day hiking). Upsides were very helpful staff, good view, and 2 min walk to supermarket if you needed supplies.

Good hotel with good layout. Dinner at the restaurant was affordable and tasty! The rooms fit the style of the pictures, which I would describe as cozy and natural. Bathrooms seem recently updated with nice soaking tub. Only incident was when we came for breakfast at 9:58 and received a curt welcome from the front desk that breakfast would be closing and that we should come earlier (probably true, but we were tired and it was a buffet!).

Stayed for 5 nights, have little to complain about, the hotel is everything you can possibly expect from a 3 star hotel. A few things to help you make an informed decisions, things that were not clear to us at first:

Location: "hotel with view over the Lago argentino" is a little misleading, we were expecting the hotel to be quite close to the lake, it's not at all. It's actually on a little hill 10 minutes walk from the main street "libertadores", next to an empty field and close to the large supermarket "la anonima".

View: we stayed in the room L. Argentino (all rooms have lake names as far as we could see) - on the reception level in the left corner of the hotel looking over the city. There is a view to the lake and surrounding area, but it's partly obstructed by the buildings in front of the hotel property.

Room: very large and spacious, with an ante-room almost. There is floor heating which was for the most part on, but no other heaters to dry your clothes on, say after a heavy rain. Huge bed, fridge, tv, even a dvd player, desk, two very comfortable armchairs and so on.
Only downside: really poor noise isolation, we could hear every word and moan of the couple in the next room. Wine glasses in the room are a nice touch, candy on the pillow also.

Bathroom: has a bathtub with massage options :), floor heating, bidet. Water is tricky to stabilize to the right temperature, we often had scolding hot or freezing, mostly because the pressure on the hot is very weak.
The downside was definitely the shower aspect (the shower function of the bathtub) as it was old - think pre-industrial age - and kind of broken coming out of the wall at every touch. They should replace it.

Staff: super friendly and well educated, attending to every need with great care.

Breakfast: somewhere above average, had enough choice, especially the pancakes with the jams on offer, but lacked more consistent and well prepared food. Pancakes were bland and kept tearing apart for example.

Food in general in medium prices for a hotel, hit and miss mostly. The bruschetta were awesome, the pizza was horrible, the volcano desert brownie with ice cream is delicious!

Transfer to city: available daily from 19:30 to 23:00. When dinning out just ask the restaurant to call the hotel for a free transfer back.

Overall conclusion: for 84usd a night, well worth it. Ratio quality/price well in your favour.

Congratulations to the staff for such a good job. We'll definitely come back.
