This is an amazing place. I took the bus from San Juan here and took a night trip, because I was told the there would be a great moon. It was ok, but not exactly what I expected. So the next day, I took a day trip which was much better. It was difficult to get great photos at night, but the night trip was a different experience.

We were a little hesitant on how our experience would turn out, but we were delighted with what we saw.
Accessing private land, the walk through the valley is fascinating for its geology and history. The petrified trees and dinosaur bones are spectacular.
The walk is not the easiest, so people without a reasonable level of fitness should not consider this trip.
We were fortunate that it was not too windy on the day we visited (this is Patagonia!). Sunscreen and drinking water are essential.
The valley is a photographer's delight.

You can only access this piece of land with a tour as the petrified trees and dinosaur bones are on private land, half-way between Calafate and Chalten. If you plan on staying in both Calafate and Chalten try to use the tour as transfer, as you can start the tour in Calafate but then being taken to Chalten, and vice versa. The fossils are very interesting, you wouldn't believe that these trees are actually rocks, they look so much like normal trees. They were scattered everywhere. Compared with the Petrified Forest National Park further inland, this one has more trees, though smaller trees. The tour is easy, the walk short, the guide gave plenty information, and the scenery is great. I enjoyed it a lot. Went with Walk Patagonia.

Interesting walk on private land with a friendly, informative guide. We saw plenty of fossilised trees, dinosaur bones and "Star Wars- type" unusual rock formations, in an impressive setting.

We used this trip as a transfer between El Calafate and El Chalten, which worked well. We booked it with Walk Patagonia.

This is the second time I visit La Leona Petrified Forest. I actually loved doing this for the second time rather than doing the mini trekking on Perito Moreno for the second time. The landscape in the petrified forest (semi-desert), with its rock and sediment formations, fossils, and petrified tree trunks is fascinating. The two-hour hike is wonderful (not recommended for people with asthma, leg injuries, or severe heart conditions); the last leg of the hike is somewhat (mildly) challenging. But it is vary satisfying. The guides are very knowledgeable. The visit is a fantastic complement to the visit to the Parque Nacional Los Glaciares, especially to understand the geological formation of the Patagonian region. Go prepared with layers (the weather can vary a lot, but expect lots of wind and dust), sun glasses, hat, and light gloves. Bring water and lots of sun screen.
