“Burgau. Far from the madding crowd.”
Reviewed 13 July 2015 for a stay in June 2015

Burgau is a delightful fishing village in the Western Algarve with an excellent beach and fishing boats on the sea front. It has quaint, narrow streets with little traffic, white painted cottages with flashes of blue and orange and enough bars and restaurants without being totally touristy. None of the package holiday operators are represented here. The village retains much of its Portugese charm, the locals are friendly, warm and welcoming. We didn't feel the need to venture out, but more tourist oriented pursuits, lively night life, clubs and busy noise is a 5 minute drive or taxi to Luz or 18 minutes to Lagos.
We visited the apartment in June 2015. Two adults and teenage daughter. It has a good location in this relatively new build on the edge of the village which is a very short, easy walk away. The beach isn't much further though the road slopes towards the sea. The apartment is as described, spacious, clean and well appointed. The air conditioning ensures a pleasant environment, has remote control and isn't noisy.
Our daughter was very pleased to discover that her bedroom had an ensuite bathroom with a big bath and shower. Day one was D day for the bidet as she became familiar with the opulent plumbing and the sensation of warm feet from the heated tiles.
The master bedroom has a bathroom across the way and ample built in cupboard space, different lighting modes, a super comfortable bed, quality bedding and pillows. Both bedrooms have access to the veranda through large glass doors, mosquito slide screens and electric shutters. I didn't see a mosquito during our stay. The sun pours through the large windows in the morning but can be totally eliminated by a single press of a button to close the shutters.
Living room also has access to the veranda, more mood setting lighting, quality seating and furniture, TV, DVD, a selection of reading material and pleasant decoration, recently provided WiFi.
Kitchen is well equipped with dishwasher, washing machine and all the powders and fluids needed, big fridge/freezer, microwave and modern electric oven. Other handy accoutrements included foil, film, cleaning products, kitchen towel, spotlessly clean oven trays and an obvious attention to detail. More access to outside through a glass door.
We spent most of our time on the lovely, long veranda which covers the entire rear of the property. There is a barbeque, table, chairs and parasol. The veranda is in full sun until late afternoon. The apartment isn't overlooked at the back and the picturesque view is across a field to the white painted village with the blue, blue ocean just behind. Cicadas come out at dusk and serenade to accompany the view as it changes to the beautiful, flickering lights of the village. Low light pollution enables a view of a panoply of stars to complete the idyllic ambience.
There's a bar/restaurant with a pool a minute walk away. The reasonable prices are made even better by the discount card on the apartment key ring which gives a further 10% off. Visitors to Domusiberica can get access to the members only part but the club require €30 deposit for the swipe card which opens the gate. There was no problem with reimbursement and I highly recommend getting the card from the front office. The ornamental pond has a turtle and huge toads that become very vocal in the evening. There's some stuff in the store room upstairs that has been left by previous visitors that is handy for visits to the beach and a couple of bikes are available. We didn't use the roof terrace or the underground parking.
Good points :- Unspoilt village, good beach, restaurants and bars. Superbly located in quiet position, well appointed apartment in good order with excellent views. Arrived home with all laundry washed and dried!
Best point:- If there is anything that is not right, contact Elizabeth and she will wave her wand to fix it. Without doubt, the most conscientious, hard working and thoughtful landlady I have encountered. Well done Elizabeth, 10/10!

“Great Apartment Great Location!”

Our prebooked taxi never turned up so we should have used the taxi recommended by the owner's agent. Then we found we booked the wrong month!! So we arrived really late, but the agent was still available to meet us, which was great. After being shown round the apartment we were really impressed at the standard. When we woke up in the morning we were so pleased to see lovely views of the sunrise, sea and country, great terrace outside the bedrooms and living room, and a roof terrace too. We had everything we needed and more. We could easily walk into the village and to the beach. Good bus service too to Lagos. Burgau is an absolutely delightful village, and you cant beat having a sangria over looking the sea. We had one minor issue with the window shutter, but it was sorted quickly. Owner was very helpful too, and booking straight forward. All in all an excellent holiday!
