EXTREMELY BAD! Stayed at this hotel in February 2012. When we arrived, the pool was slightly cloudy, but in the space of a week deteriorated to an opaque green/yellow soup. The only answer the staff seemed to have was to throw more and more chlorine in, which didn’t do the trick at all. For a hotel with 76 rooms, there are just 9 sunloungers, most of them broken wood, topped by filthy brown plastic mattresses which were coming apart and were never cleaned. There is plenty of room around the pool area and on the grass to accommodate many more sunloungers, but the management are tight-fisted and just don’t seem to care.

As the pool was so cloudy and discoloured, we tried to sunbathe on the few loungers located at the far end of the pool. However, the paving stones were dangerously uneven, and the whole area was covered in a thick layer of dried mud, which appeared to have been there since the previous rainy season, and which made shoes necessary at all times. This area was not swept or washed during the whole time we were there. All the paved areas around the hotel had masses of weeds coming through them, contributing to the generally run-down feel of the place. In the flowerbeds under the rooms there were empty Scotch bottles, old tin cans, dirty tissues, crisp packets, exposed electrical wires, blue plastic water bottles – none of which were cleaned up at any time while we were there.

The Abalone has quite an extensive menu of various meals and cocktails. When, though, anyone asked for anything which required the tandoori, (eg tikka masala, tikka anything, naan bread etc) we were told that the “ tandoori chef had gone home for the year” and the manager couldn’t be bothered to get another one because the season was coming to an end. This effectively limited the menu to a very narrow range of food, and of what was left we were all told that there was no paneer, no chana, sometimes no dhal, often no fish, sometimes no fruit (although there was a fruit stall 30 seconds away outside the hotel!) Similarly, although there are pages listing various cocktails and mocktails, we were told that the wine waiter had been sent home the week before, and there was no one at the hotel who knew how to mix them, so forget it! The food and drink is also overpriced compared to restaurants outside the hotel in Arpora, which unlike Baga ,Calangute and other beach towns still has reasonable prices for excellent cuisine. The plastic tables at breakfast time were completely filthy - you can see the ground-in dirt in the ridges around the table edges! 19 red plastic chairs, most of them split or completely broken. Meals had to be taken within 5 metres of a large TV, which was on at full volume showing mainly cricket in the day, and football at night.

Positive notes were the waiters, who were both very helpful while working under very difficult conditions. The room boys are also really hardworking and diligent, and always gave us a cheery smile! However, overall beware, this place is a dump!
