Owner description: South African roots. Worldwide acclaim. Gary and Kathy Jordan have been making world-class wines since 1993 on a farm with a history going back over 300 years. He's a geologist, she's an economist - together this husband and wife team is a phenomenon. Gary's parents, Ted and Sheelagh, bought the 146-hectare Stellenbosch property in 1982, and embarked on an extensive replanting programme, specializing in classic varieties suited to the different soils and slopes. From the Jordan hillside vineyards one has spectacular panoramic views of Table Mountain, False Bay and Stellenbosch. Gary and Kathy worked internationally for two years, refining their high-energy instincts with practical experience. They returned home to build a cellar in 1992. The following year the vines were judged ready for making wines that would carry the Jordan name. From that first year it was obvious that a new star had been added to the winemaking firmament. Continuing success has enlarged the team, with the focus on producing fiercely individual wines that combine the fruity accessibility of the New World with the Classic Elegance of the Old. Jordan wines - a team effort, distinctly individual in character. Unique by Nature's Design. The Jordan philosophy is simple: Success begins in the vineyards. Exceptional wines are made possible by careful management of the farm's extensive natural assets through innovative canopy management and selecting varieties and clones specifically suited to the various soils and slopes. Unique by Nature's Design, the Jordan slopes face North, South, East, and West, with vineyards lying at differing altitudes from 160 to 410 m above sea level. The vineyards with their close proximity to both the Indian and Atlantic Oceans benefit from coastal fog and cool breezes. A mild Mediterranean climate with a maritime influence minimizes the risk of frost damage. The soils at Jordan have evolved from 600 million year old Cape Granite, and range from deep, well-drained clay-loam to gravelly and sandy duplex soils situated on clay. The Jordan philosophy combines the vineyards' natural assets with innovative management, creating a profound expression of terroir. It also includes a profound respect for nature with a selection of indigenous flora and fauna to be found on the farm Technology in the hands of Mother Nature The cellar is pure Jordan. An elegant, yet bold fusion of Old and New World architectural ideas. State-of-the-art, practical and functional, the high-tech elements blend easily with the forces of nature. The cellar is designed around a gravity flow system using natural cooling through recessing the cellar into the slope of the mountain. Stainless steel fermentation tanks, varying in capacity, enable fruit from individual vineyards to be vinified separately. Tanks are jacketed with cooling bands to ensure controlled fermentation and storage temperatures. The barrel-fermented white wines are made according to Classic Burgundian methods. Fermentation takes place in the coolest area of the underground cellar. Separate barrel cellars are designated for Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Shiraz where the wines mature and undergo malolactic fermentation in Bordeaux-shaped barrels. To ensure the highest level of quality, all wine is bottled and labeled on site, thus completing the circle from vineyards to wine. The Jordan cellar - a perfect environment to transform exceptional fruit into world-class wine.

Visiting in Stellenbosch simply means you need to find those wine estates that really just resonate with you... And one of those estates is Jordan Wine Estate. (Purely because of the incredible Chardonnay that they produce.)

I think what you need to understand about this estate is that they have slopes facing North, East, South & West. And vineyards lying between 160 & 410 meters above sea level. An they are exposed to both the Indian & Atlantic Ocean. Now this creates a perfect Mediterranean climate for growing grapes of great quality.

2 of my favourites from this wine farm that I'm suggesting you try are the Unoaked Chardonnay & The Outlier (Sauvignon Blanc). Don't get me started on the reserve & vintage wines, because that is a completely different story for a different day.

To understand the wine, you need to understand the cellar in my opinion. On a tour through the cellar, you get a feeling of both very modern & the old school ways of making wine, using stainless steel tanks & barrels. Whilst making use of a gravity flow system & natural cooling.

As they put it; "The Jordan cellar - a perfect environment to transform exceptional fruit into world-class wine."

There is also a private tasting room downstairs in the vinoteque cellar which is exclusively used for vintage tastings. It's absolutely beautiful down there. I can just imagine on a summer evening being down there sipping on some of their special wines.

Had wonderful lunch with great wine. Everyone enjoyed their lunch and trip to the cheese room. Delicious mussels with beautiful side salad. Perfectly prepared fish dish and butternut squash ravioli. Wished we had booked accommodations for the evening. Beautiful setting.

We shared a cheese platter which was more than enough for the two of us. We sat under beautiful trees and admired the vineyards in the distance. It is definitely worth visiting the bakery.

My friends and I had lunch at Jordan on the weekend, after hearing rave reviews of the food.

The setting is gorgeous, with lots of different views to take in.
The bread platter was amazing, with homemade butter and aoli, and the delicious breads and sead crackers were a hit.

Unfortunately the waiter never explained the menu to us, so when we all ordered the artichoke starter, we assumed it was a globe artichoke. We were severely disappointed to receive a tiny pie, with artichoke purée, even after my friend mentioned she was gluten and wheat intolerant. The waiter should have informed us of the pastry at that point.

The mains were better, especially the cauliflower dish. The Seabass was tasty but not out of the ordinary, as we had been hoping for.

We ended off with a cheese platter, which had a nice experience of being able to choose the cheeses ourselves, from quite a large selection.

The afternoon as a whole was very nice but we wouldn't rush back for the food unfortunately.

We did a 30-45 minute cellar tour with these guys, and it was one of the highlights of our trip to the area! Very knowledgeable host, and gives you a good sense for the complexity of creating great wine. The wine tasting itself was also excellent - we liked both their whites (particularly their oaked Chardonnay) and their reds (particularly their Syrah and Cab).

Their bakery and coffee shop was also very warm and bustling on a Friday morning. Worth a visit for breakfast if you want to see this estate but have other tastings planned for later in the day.

Thank you for the great review.
We are so pleased to hear that you had a great cellar tour. We so enjoy having guests get a behind the scenes perspective on what goes on in the cellar.

We are thrilled to hear you enjoyed the Barrel Fermented Chardonnay. It has fast become one of iconic white wines and definitely does not disappoint.

The Bakery at Jordan is open 7 days a week and we are continuously changing the menu to keep it exciting for repeat guests.

We hope to see you back at Jordan Wine Estate soon.
Best wishes
