Nice little restaurant in the Thesen Island part of Knysna. Food is really good and fresh (we like the olive platter) and bakery is also good. Nice coffee, too. Slightly odd system where they stop serving at 11.00 am, then don't start again until 11.30 - an absolutely rigid system! Also, no bookings, so OK in the winter, when it's quiet, but in the summer can be frustrating.

We decided to drive up to Knysna for breakfast with friends at Ile de Pain. We had been before and thoroughly enjoyed it. Knowing it is popular we were there at 08h00 as it opened. Within 30 minutes it was full.

The french toast, creme fraiche and berries was perfect and something to return for. The menu is varied and interesting. Prices are slightly above average but worth it. Coffee was strong and hot and helped end a great breakfast.

We bought a loaf of their signature Companje bread to take home. It never made it - it was gone long before.

Would strongly recommend Ile de Pain

I was absolutely delighted (despite getting wet in the pouring rain) to again experience Ile de Pain in Knysna.
We had the pizza which was perfection itself. Service was faultless - friendly and extremely obliging and accommodating. They even made a special coffee for me which had been taken off the menu - plus gave me half a slice of cake so I could take the other half home for later.
I am soooo happy they are open again! Thank you Wellington and the rest of the staff!

This rebuilt cafe has a lovely ambiance which is welcoming whether you're coming on your own or with a group of people. There are lovely little touches and flourishes in the decoration throughout the restaurant including the very cute bill tray.

The bakery stocks a very wide selection of bread, pastries and sweets however they are known to sell out so if you want the best selection then come earlier in the day.

The lunch was delicious. The cauliflower salad (served with optional chicken skewer) had a lovely balance of sweet, nuttiness and freshness from the roasted cauliflower to the fresh ribbons of carrots. A lovely warm salad for a rainy winters day.
The roast beef sandwich was also thoroughly recommendable.

The croissant (we took away) had almost perfect lamination and was lovely with jam.

The products and menu items are not cheap by South African standards but the price hike is justifiable given the high quality.

Opens from 08 00 to 15 00. We were there at 15 10 and they let us in to have something for take away. Well decorated and spacious. Had the croissant and opera. Simply delicious.
