This hotel is just wonderful, it has the real Wow factor when you walk through the door. The staff are excellent from the minute you arrive and wave goodbye when you leave. Nothing is too much trouble. The room and decor are fantastic. The views incredible, you can even watch the whales swimming past from the verandah, where you can eat breakfast, watch the sun go down and enjoy the sun and views all day long. I wish we had stayed longer. It is incredible. The food is brilliant too, breakfast is delicious and dinner lovely too, with a different menu each night.

We enjoyed our stayed at Birkenhead House so much that we hardly left the hotel! Our room was SO beautiful – both the interior and the balcony overlooking the ocean. The food, service and general ambience are just PURE luxury. The spa was also great! On our one big adventure from the hotel – a hike along the oceanfront trail into the town – we saw DOZENS of whales just off the beach!

I have found my paradise on earth. Birkenhead House is truly an amazing boutique hotel to stay. With only 11 rooms and all styled in a unique way around different themes, from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave you will feel incredibly special.
I recommend the full board option if you are staying here, there is nothing that isn't included. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner all exceptional and the location of the infinity pool will have you wishing you'd booked more nights. We sat and watched wales only 100m from shore with a morning mimosa. Something we will never forget.
A very romantic and memorable stay as part of our honeymoon indeed. I can't wait to return one day to this heaven hotel in Hermanus!!

The best hotel we have ever stayed in. The hotel is small and on arrival at the front door looks unimpressive, however one step inside and it becomes an enchanting experience. The decor is stylish and beautiful yet completely comfortable and luxurious. The welcome is warm and genuinely friendly, the managers personable and full of interesting chat. The food is heavenly and the wine marvellous. All the staff are smiling and helpful. It is impossible to over emphasise the quality of this hotel. Throw in the utterly breathtaking views of the ocean with the whales swimming by and you have perfection. We will be back.

This has to be one of the best hotels that we have stayed in and the team that run it are incredible. The staff introduce themselves to you, shake your hand, welcome you like the mean it and seem to have a sixth sense such that they know when you want a coffee.

The food is fantastic, we were there two nights and the dinner menu changed both nights. You don’t have to book a table or a time, just sit down when you want and you will be some of the finest food you can eat. The choice of wines to go with you meal is extensive and included in the price, but if you want to buy that special bottle then they have that covered too with knowledgable staff that can help with the choice.

Lunch is tapas plates with options for all palettes all freshly prepared so that you can eat as much or as little as you want. Breakfast is one of the best we have eaten, from the home made musli to the cooked options... all are great.

We only stayed for two nights, and regret not staying longer. There is more to do in the area than we thought, with the hotel only happy to organise excursions and drive you to them. One thing not to miss is the cliff walk to Hermanus. This is a nice 3 mile walk that can take an hour or two, if you are lucky enough to spot some whales like we did. When you get to Hermanus, if you don’t fancy the walk back, just pop into Marine Hotel and they will call Birkenhead House who will come and pick you up.

One point to note is that the pools aren’t heated so if you are visiting in the whale watching season I would expect them to be a bit cold.

Buildings don’t make great hotels, the people running it do and make no mistake this is a great hotel. Definitely worth a detour and we are already planning to return.
