We had a lovely family day out to Aquila. We go served welcome drinks on our arrival: ( sparkling wine or grape juice) then had some coffee/tea and light snacks while waiting for our game drive. The game drive was fun: saw lots of animals including Elephant, Giraffe, Mountain Zebra, White Rhino: one female had a tiny calf: so very cute. We also saw Lions with a carcass eating dinner. Our ranger was good: knowledgeable and had quite a sense of humour. Half way through the safari we stopped in an area for drinks( sparkling wine or grape juice) and light snacks. There was also a toilet there. All in all an enjoyable late afternoon.

Aquila is a good option if you are only coming to Cape Town and have never seen African Wildlife before. The food is great, but the safari is very commercialized. You do see animals up close for pictures, but if you have been to the Kruger before, its a very disappointing experience. So go if this is your only chance to see the Big 5, if you have more time consider driving to Addo National Park near Port Elizabeth.

Stayed here with a friend, we arrived early and wanted to use the spa so staff allowed us to check in at 130 instead of 1400.

Stay- Highly recommend the overnighter in a luxury cottage, the view onto the reserve was fab.
Beds were comfy and bathrooms was incredible with a heated shower outside!

Safari- We saw all animals we hoped to see; lions, elephants, rhinos- even the baby!!, hippo’s, zebra, buffalo etc. Our guide was excellent knowledgable, friendly and got us up nice and close which was fab for some pictures!

Food- was nice, what you’d expect of a buffet- variety and fresh which is what you want!

Spa- you have to pay extra to use it and it’s facilities, check the sauna and steam room work before you pay as neither worked for us! We did have a massage which was lovely though and got to use the facilities for free.

Overall throughly enjoyed our stay, and defo recommend the over night package.

So far an awesome stay just remember to layer clothing it's very cold here in September and windy. All the meals are buffet and it's so-so. I would highly recommend an overnight stay and an early morning Safari so you can see the Lions it was spectacular and our driver was amazing and informative. I would also highly recommend that whenever you're using a GPS to get here if it takes you through the mountains it's gonna be a horrifying experience. Ask for local advice in Cape Town if we staying there on how to drive there.

Dear McK5nz,

Thank you for your lovely 4-star review. We are glad that you highly recommended an overnight stay to others and enjoyed the safari experience! We are just unsure what you are referring to with regards to GPS and directions, as we have never heard of anyone experiencing difficulty in reaching the reserve with Google Maps etc, as it is straight for 2 hours on the N1, with one left turn to the reserve. The directions can be found on our website, under Directions.

Best wishes,
Team Aquila

Our overnight stay began by being taken from CapeTown to Aquila, a very pleasant 2 hr drive through the countryside. On arrival at Aquila we received a welcome drink prior to being shown to our very comfortable lodge. Lunch was buffet style with a wide selection of foods, the quality and quantity was excellent. WThen the main event, the safari. John was our driver/guide/ranger and he made the trip memorable, his knowledge and expertise ensured we had a great time. Thanks John. He made every effort to ensure the safari lived up to expectations and it did. We even stopped mid safari for a drink and nibbles. The BIG 5 became the big 3, Lions/Leopard remained elusive despite Johns efforts. But tomorrow was another day. Dinner was also buffet style with national dishes available, quality and quantity as before. Safari number 2 was the following morning,6:30 sharp. We were again fortunate to have John lead this....... he freely shared his expertise in particular “wear warm clothing”,a bit chilly until the sun fully got up. The early start was oh so worth it when we saw the lions, firstly on top of a mountain they then made their way down and eventually were a few feet from the vehicle. John positioned the vehicle to ensure safe and spectacular viewing of these magnificent beasts. The leopard remained elusive. No worries,it’s a nature reserve not a theme park after all. A fantastic time was had. BIG thanks to John and an even BIGGER thanks to the animals of Aquila.
