Well situated with great access to restaurants and attractions. Staff were a bit unfriendly and the breakfast vouchers are not sufficient to cover the cost of a full breakfast, meaning you will be paying in more for your 1st meal of the day. That said, the rooms are very comfortable.

When booking, ensure to request a room away from the road as the bars blast music out until 1am.

Overall, quite good.

Compaction and kindness is not a practice, in fact, based on the manager, they run a business.

We paid for 3 nights and stayed 1 and a cold behavior of its your problem (and we didn’t even ask for the money back on the 2 nights)

Be careful!!

We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused to you, however you missed your flight and insisted that we had made profit off of you and requested a refund. We turned a lot of business away for those two nights and unfortunately could not refund you your accommodation. We tried our utmost to sell the room at the last minute as you had booked 3 x weeks in advance and unfortunately we were unable to resell the room. You asked for complimentary breakfast as it was not included in your rate and we gave it to you.

We stayed for 2 nights at The Hippo. We booked in for bed & breakfast, and only found out after we'd booked (from Trip Adviser) that there is no breakfast served in the hotel, We wanted to walk from our room to a breakfast area, not have to walk down the road and round the corner to find a street cafe! The hotel gave us a voucher each for 100 rand (around £6) and it was impossible to find the breakfast we wanted for this price. We had one drink (around 25 rand) a toasted sandwich and a croissant. We were clearly expected to pay 'extra' for anything else. On our first morning we had a pick up booked for 8am (for a day trip), and only one cafe was open, so we had no choice of where to eat and were rushed to have breakfast before returning to the hotel for our pick up. The room in the Hippo was adequate and quite large with a fridge, microwave and a selection of crockery and cutlery, but it was all a bit 'tired', Luckily we were at the rear of the building so no noise from the bar below. We specifically booked a hotel with a pool as I swim every day, but were told the pool was closed because of the water shortage. We believed this - until we saw many 'open' hotel pools in the area, and spoke to other visitors who had open pools in their hotels. We asked if we could see the pool in case we wanted to book again (when there was no water shortage), but were refused. Is there actually a pool in this hotel? We saw no signs or evidence of a pool. It's clearly well hidden. The hotel is fairly central and within easy walking distance of shops and restaurants.

Guest feedback is imperative for us to ensure whether or not we are meeting and exceeding our guests' expectations. We need to know when we have done right, but more importantly, when we have done wrong!

Our swimming pool is closed due to the water level being low and we cannot clean it, however our guests lie around the pool and not swim in it. I am not sure how the other hotels are getting water as we have a serious drought in this city and it is against the law to fill up your pool. Some hotels are buying water in with tanks, we are in the process of working on a solution for these challenges.

Your interest and concern are therefore extremely valuable to us, and we hope that you will be staying with us again soon.

The rooms are very nice, not too expensive and the location is fantastic. All sorts of great restaurants in the area. Get an amazing cocktail at Cause Effect across the street and then walk down a few doors for a superb meal at Thali. Make sure to go to Table Mountain and do the full hike to the other end (it will take 45 minutes each way, but well worth it.) Robben Island is a must, too.

Room Tip: ask for a room in the back off the street (quieter)

We stayed here for 4 nights as part of our honeymoon trip in South Africa and it didn't get off to a good start.

The hotel is situated above restaurant bars and this is the main problem. As soon as we checked into the room on the first evening, we knew there would be an issue. The room was literally vibrating from the noise of the bar below. It was caused by loud music with a very heavy bass which you could feel even when lying in bed. The double glazing did nothing to alleviate this problem as it was coming up directly from beneath the floor.

The bar is open until 2:00am so as you can imagine, a good night's sleep was elusive, which was upsetting when we were tired from our busy days around Capetown.

Even on the first night, we approached the night receptionist to ask whether it was possible to change rooms. She was very polite but explained that there were no rooms available that night, although there may be tomorrow.

On the following morning, the day receptionist was less polite and just said no.

On the second evening, the night receptionist was again very polite and said there would be a room available elsewhere in the hotel for our third night's stay. She booked us into that room and we were happy.

However, on the next morning, on our way out for the day, we asked the day receptionist when we should move our bags into the new room. She didn't seem impressed that we were moving rooms, but told us it was fine, we could move them when we got back to the hotel later. When we returned to the hotel later and approached the desk for our new room key, the night receptionist informed us that we were too late to move now and that there must have been "a misunderstanding" with the day receptionist...

Finally, on our last night, we did get to move to another room at the back of the hotel, and what a difference it made. No noise at all and a good night's sleep was enjoyed - just unfortunate that we were checking out the next day.

Ultimately, the reason for the 1 star review is that the hotel failed in its primary function - to be able to sleep there.

There were a few other niggles - such as the mould in the bathroom and the rude day receptionist - but if we had been in a back room from the start, this hotel would have scored a higher rating.

Room Tip: Avoid Room 12! A back room is quieter.

Your interest and concern are therefore extremely valuable to us, we will follow up each one with an action plan to improve our overall impression of our hotel.
On behalf of Hippo Boutique Hotel, I would like to humbly apologize for the experience with regards to the noise from the restaurants. We are looking at how to minimize the noise from the restaurants and appreciate your honest feedback. We have double glazed the windows and we are in the process of putting carpets with rubber to absorb the sound from the restaurant below. The restaurants are supposed to be closed and cashed up by 12 pm on the weekends and 11 pm during the week. I confirm therefore that your concerns are being addressed in a serious light and that action is being taken to rectify any shortcomings in our service and facilities.

We hope that you will re consider with regards to staying with us again as we should welcome another opportunity to show you Hippo Boutique Hospitality at its best!
