“One of the world's most beautiful hikes”

Hoerikwaggo Table Mountain Trail
Reviewed 24 December 2011

Incredible. The scenery of this area defies belief, an incredible combination of unique and spectacular mountains, and ludicrously blue sea. Couple the Fynbos Floral Kingdom to this, and it's a world-must-do. Astonishing.

This overnight hike in the Table Mountain National Park was a wonderful way to experience the mountains and nature of Cape Town, the close proximity of which is one of the unique qualities of the city. We hiked from Silvermine across to the Hout Bay side, through gorgeous fynbos vegetation, which were a multi-hued carpet of green. The view as we descended was of deep blue ocean crashing against the rocks and wheeling sea birds if you lifted your head, or orange and brown rocks and a variety of small flowering shrubs if you watched your feet. We spent the night in the Orange Kloof tented camp where our bags had been delivered. The camps have a rustic charm but are very comfortable, with beds, hot showers and a fully equipped kitchen. Our group had brought a spectacular feast which we prepared on the open fire which was laid by our two guides. Our spirits were somewhat dampened by the pouring rain the next morning, and the news that the cable car was not running which had been our intended end point, but the guides assured us that the Disa gorge was still awaiting us and an alternative endpoint had been arranged. The gorge was created by the Disa River, and is one of the few remaining tracts of afro-montain vegetation in the world. Large trees with shiny green leaves, yellowwoods with spiky green leaves and occasional banks of flowering king protea shrubs. The sounds of the birds calling and the running water made it difficult to remember that we were in the middle of a metropolis. The guides were diligent and well informed about the trails, the history of the area and the plants. A true restorative experience for body and spirit.
