“Fawlty Towers By the Sea”
Reviewed 26 February 2012

Decided to go to the Winchester Mansions for after-noon tea this Sunday as it close by and within walking distance. Even though our previous visit was a disaster with poor quality sandwiches we decided to give it a second try.

Unfortunately our visit this time was no better. We arrived at the inside courtyard to be told that they where not serving afternoon tea as they where still packing up from the sunday jazz brunch.

I then asked for the restaurant manager who was in the background laughing and pinching the female staff. He came over and proceeded to say that it was unsafe in the courtyard as they where moving tables. If we wanted we could go and eat on the terrace at Harveys. I did not take his name but he was French or Italian.

When we got to Harveys there was a sign saying they where closed.... We then sat down anyway and decided to wait. We asked several times for someone to serve us but could only find the cleaning staff. The people at the table next to us where also upset and returned the tea they had because the cups where dirty. After about 30 minutes, someone finally came to take our order. At which time we where fed up and decided to go to La Vie down the road.

I think the owners should take a serious look at the service they provide at the hotel. If the restaurant manager wanted to try and look after us, the least he could have done was take us to Harveys and make sure we where served, which he did not.

I have to say that the location of the hotel is fantastic just opposite, the sea point promenade. But I hope other visitors dont experience such poor service as we have.

Dear NATO-SA

Thank you for your review and apologies for only replying now. The Fawlty Tower comparison hurts a bit, yet you were exposed to below expectation service, for which I wish to apologise. I sent a separate message via Tripadvisor asking you to please return and contact us before doing so. I hope you will! Again many thanks for your time.

Our family spend 4 nights here, and we all enjoyed it immensely. With three teenagers this cannot be taken for granted. We loved the food, the atmosphere in the bar and in the courtyard, and all the smiling faces around us. The massage at the spa was very good too. The reception gave us good advise on where to dine and were very helpfull in calling cabs, reserving tables etc. We hope to be able to come back soon.

Dear MamaDK

Thank you for your time to review us. If we managed to please the three teenagers we see this as a compliment. I have a daughter who already behaves like one with only 11 years of age, so I understand what you say. Please bring them back real soon!

I've just had a most wonderful week at The Winchester Mansions in Cape Town. The food is wonderful and the staff really can't do enought to help. It has a delightful atmosphere (you can eat inside or in the beautiful courtyard). It's a lovely walk along the waterfront to the quay (offering lots of trips) and shopping etc or the hotel supplies a free mini bus.

My friend and I stayed for 7 nights and were given a suite which was fantastic. We had a really good time and would definately stay here again if we visit South Africa. All the staff were friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Unfortunately there was a fight in the bar one evening. The general public are permitted to use the bar, and I understand that the trouble was caused by locals. It was unpleasant for a while and I was very scared as it did get a bit nasty. The police were called and the three trouble makers ran up the road, the police raced off the find them. About half an hour later he police van returned with the three men in the back of the van, and let them out right outside the hotel were they stayed talking to staff. Very odd, but I'm sure there was a perfectly good reason for this. On another night a couple of locals got very drunk and the female ended up on the floor, and then proceeded to pester guests on the terrace. I know that the hotel cannot be blamed for people getting drunk, but it's not what one expects in a hotel of this standard. Having said all this I would not wish to put anyone off staying here, and we would definately like to return.
