“Robben Island”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 April 2012

If you have the time in Cape Town, I would recommend spending half a day learning about the history of this infamous prison island. If the weather is good you are also treated to a magnificent view of Table Mountain over the bay. Younger kids may be bored but 10yrs and up will appreciate the tour. Go early in the morning, book online and choose the newer ferry the Sikhululekile, more comfortable and stable especially when it gets windy and the trip can get rocky.

“Extremely Interesting”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 April 2012

It can't be called a fun day out but Robben Island shines a light on the harshness of the apartheid era. It can be recommended to any one but wouldn't be interesting for anyone under the age 10 as certain areas of the tour may be difficult to understand.

“OK but could be better”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 April 2012

I visited Robben Island today for the first time, having lived in Cape Town since 1994 and in South Africa all my life. The format was basically as follows:
1. Ferry ride from the Waterfront to Robben Island (30 minutes),
2. Guided bus trip around the Island (1 hour 30 minutes),
3. Guided tour of the Political Prisoners Prison itself (1 hour),
4. Ferry ride from Robben Island back to the Waterfront (30 minutes).

For the most part it was an interesting tour; but there was not much time to actually explore the island apart from sitting on a bus and being shuttled from one point-of-interest to another. When at any of these points-of-interest, there is a minor "scuffle" of buses to get to see the attraction. You hardly get out the bus at all, so most photos have to be taken from inside and the windows are not very clean, so the photos have interesting lines to them. Having said that, the guide on the bus was very entertaining and she gave a lot of useful information in a witty and charming manner. The guide in the prison itself was rather long-winded and seemed to draw the tour out far longer than the other groups. All-in-all, I would recommend doing the tour - both for tourists and for fellow South Africans.

Having read some of the other reviews of this past month, I am very grateful that the ferry was working today and we made it out and back safely.

“Very moving experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 April 2012 via mobile

We turned up on the day, at 10.30am and managed to secure seats for 11am ferry. Ride over was smooth and we found the staff to be very pleasant. On arrival to the harbour, you get on a bus, which drives you to all the key places on the island, with a guide explaining everything along the way. You get to stop at one point with the view of Table Mountain and lions head - a stunning picture! Then you get escorted round the prison building by an ex political prisoner - my husband am I were moved to tears by his story, I think his name was
stando mbata (not sure of spelling). The boat ride is 30 mins each way, leaving 2 hours for the tour. We didn't get time to go and see the penguins, and in places it did feel a bit rushed - to improve this tour they could add an extra 30-60 minutes as it would enable both the guides and customers to relax a bit more! If you are in Cape town you must do this - we nearly didn't go and were appalled by this fact once the tour was over! A real highlight of our trip we learnt a lot and as I said, found it to be a very moving and thought provoking experience
