“Great bar!”
Reviewed 29 February 2012

I decided to try their bar, as it was drinks time, and I thought the name of the hotel was sufficiently wacky to warrant a visit. Looked a lot of fun, especially with the Airflow caravans on the roof!

The bar was quiet when we got there, but this didn't put us off the enjoyment of some excellent margaritas, so top marks for passing that test!

Would like to stay there one day...when we return.

Situated on Long Street, the hotel is in a good location for the many local bars and restaurants and a safe and easy 15 minute walk to V & A waterfront during the day (a 40/50 ZAR taxi trip in an evening). However, make sure you book a taxi through the hotel. We took a taxi which was parked outside the hotel one evening and it soon became apparent the guy was not a competent driver. The V & A security guys are happy to hail an authorised cab on the waterfront for your return trip.

We stayed 2 nights in a Grand Daddy Suite, which was spacious, clean and well maintained with its own small outside 'garden' complete with table, chairs and a sun umbrella. Our last night was spent in an airstream trailer on the roof of the hotel. Our suite also had tea and coffee making facilities which were very welcome.

Breakfast in the hotel restaurant was excellent with a choice of juices, fruit, cereals, muffins etc. There is also a choice of hot dishes cooked to order and the breakfast certainly set us up for the day. Apart from a glitch on the first morning, service was very good and we found all the staff extremely pleasant and helpful.

We enjoyed our last night in the trailer. Fortunately, it was a Sunday when the rooftop bar is closed and luckily there were no private functions or I agree with previous comments that noise may have been a problem. I also agree the trailer has limited space (we stayed in Moon Tides, which is actually one of the bigger trailers and the bathroom/toilet area was very small), but overall it was a pleasant experience and something a little different. On a practical note, due to the space restrictions, we felt one night in the trailer was probably about right, having had the luxury of the suite the previous 2 nights. However, the bed was very comfortable as was the sitting space.

All in all we very much enjoyed the Grand Daddy experience and I would recommend the hotel as being convenient for V & A, local bars and restaurants as well as its closeness to the cable car for Table Mountain. If I had to be hyper-critical, I would say that the trailer park area could do with a spruce up as could the trailers. Whilst I totally understand the need for the hotel to make money, because the rooftop is open to the public hosting live bands and the Pink Flamingo open air cinema the area is looking a little shabby (Our outside sitting space was littered with cigarette ends).

We felt that the rooftop space should be either a public area or private for the occupants of the trailers. The trailer park is marketed as a signature of the hotel and is really what attracted us in the first place to stay there, so we probably expected something a little more up market. However, we did enjoy our stay and would recommend this quirky hotel to anyone looking for something a little different when visiting Cape Town.

Room Tip: Ask for a Grand Daddy Suite at the rear of the hotel as they have an outside sitting space.

A few days in Cape Town for the Southern Ink Tattoo Convention in Jan 2012 and staying at the Grand Daddy - a cool long weekend! ;-) Situated in the middle of Cape Town on famous Long Street , the Grand Daddy is a cool stay for experienced and open travelers - not the usual thing..! Not for the corporate traveler or your Uncle Joe from Kokomoe...The Daddy is rewarding you with a cool interior, a trailer park on the roof top and nice bars. The best: restaurants and clubs galore within walking distance. The service was o.k., but not outstanding, the team seemed very friendly but understaffed at times and the bars on the rooftop or on the first floor are not permanently open. The trailer park - a trade mark of the Grand Daddy - looks great, but is no alternative to the hotel's regular rooms, except if you like real tight spaces and have no need for sleep: The rooftop bar and stage are used regularly for concerts and private functions which would leave you in your trailer howling' at the moon! You might yourself as well get a dose of live sounds from the roof if your regular hotel room is facing into the inner courtyard.
We had a real good stay: a big, fine breakfast every day. Small, but nicely decorated room with all amenities needed. And all this in the middle of the Mother City. We will definitively come back and can recommend the Grand to 'funky' type of travelers. Rock on!

Decided to shell out the extra and stay in the done up caravans, arrive 8pm after a long day to a party on the roof outside the caravan. Help no.
You pay extra and have to put up with that noise.
Rubbish.
Rooms also poorly finnished, ours had horrid smell.

Amanda V, Manager at Grand Daddy Hotel, responded to this review, 3 April 2012
The Rooftop Trailer Park at the Grand Daddy Hotel, is an unique experience. The trailers are on the Rooftop in an open setting and thus subject to outside city noise. If functions are held on the rooftop due consideration is always given to the guests booked into the trailers to ensure that the function ends at an appropriate time, to minimize discomfort.

In this specific incident, the function was due to end a couple of minutes after the guest raised his complaint with our manager on duty. He was explained the situation and was offered alternative accommodation in one of the luxury hotel rooms, but subsequently declined the offer and decided to check –out from the hotel. We are sorry that the situation ended like this, but we are confident that our management team took all the necessary and reasonable action to try to resolve the situation and to offer the guest a suitable solution.

This is a great, fun hotel. You can't go wrong here if you want to hang out and party in Cape Town. The hotel is on Long Street, so the action is at your doorstep. The hotel also has a great party atmosphere, with a cool bar and a trailer park on the roof. When we stayed here, there was a band on the roof and tons of people having fun.

Room Tip: Sugar Daddy Suite. Great room and well-priced.
