“Great spot, very quiet and pleasant.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 October 2011

Just outside White River (2 miles max) but feels like a world away. Mountains in the background, beautiful views, very quiet, even on a weekend. The common areas were spotless and the bar had a nice terrace to chill while reading a book or a having a sundowner. Pool was not used but looked very tidy. The hotel is also set on a large site with a well-kept lawn and fruit trees, pleasant for an early morning walk.
Architecturally speaking, the building is not as intrusive as some large countryside hotels I've seen and doesn't feel like a major chain hotel. I don't know about the 'motel' look some people complained about, felt more like a resort to me.
Our bedroom was very spacious and comfortable with a very large bed and a nice balcony. The bathroom looked luxurious with plenty of hot water at any time. Cable TV had lots of channels but we only watched a film anyway.
Breakfast buffet was not part of the room deal but, out of convenience, we decided to try it in the morning of our departure. It was good and incredibly varied but brutally overpriced. Only worth it if you're really hungry.
There was a huge colourful bouncing castle near the pool, which was an eyesore and felt unnecessary since there seemed to be no kids around, but didn't bother me that much after a while since.
Staff were very attentive and helpful at all times, from the reception to the bar. I had made a mistake at the time of booking but they quickly sorted it all out with a smile. Overall a great experience.

We stayed here in late September; pretty much the off-season - too late for winter getaway, too soon for the school holidays.

The hotel is aging but is fairly well maintained. Gardens are very well kept and the trees are beautiful and well looked after. Food is fairly good and the selection at mealtimes is truly exceptional.

Location is excellent - close to Kruger Mpumalanga Airport and close to Numbi Gate. And convenient to Malelane using a by-pass to miss White River and Nelspruit if desired. The location and the good reviews on Trip Advisor made us choose this hotel.

Loved the free internet... a classy touch!

Room Tip: Pretty much all the rooms look out over the gardens - a very pleasant view with wildlife and flora i...

Having stayed at the Protea Hotel Kruger, gate twice already this year, my wife and I decided to try the Protea Hotel The Winkler out, and decided to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary, by spending a short weekend trip to this hotel.

It is very conveniently situated, being 4 hour drive from Johannesburg. It is also well situated if one wants to explore the multitude of attraction in the area, such as God's Window, Blyde River Canyon, and the Kruger National Park(KNP), to name a few. We love visiting the KNP, and used the hotel as a base for visiting the KNP.

Check in was quick and efficient, with the reception staff being friendly and helpful. What was missing, however, was a porter to assist us with our luggage and showing us to our room. oom.We were asked to take our car around to the parking around the back, which is really nice, because you are then very close to your room. We did find someone to show us where our room was situated, and he was very helpful and obliging.

Our room itself was very big, with tea and coffee making facilities and a bar fridge in the room, should one need to make use of the fridge to keep things cool. Also in the room is a nice big flat screen TV. The king size bed is also very comfortable. Decor is modern, even though its not to everyone's taste. The bathroom however, is very small. You can barely fit 2 adults in the bathroom. The hotel is also set on a large property, so if one has children that need to burn off some energy after a day's sightseeing, there is plenty of room to run around, and kick balls etc.

As we had booked on a half board basis, we went down to supper after we had freshened up. Friday night dinner was a bit disappointing. Dinner is a buffet style dinner. The selection on Friday night was not very good, and even though we went to dinner latish, but not just before the restaurant closed, it seemed as if staff were reluctant to to replenish, empty dishes. However, the food that was available was tasty. Saturday night's food was a lot better. Breakfast was very good, and even though we arrived for breakfast before opening time, the staff were helpful, and advised us to eat a continental breakfast. Staff at all meals were helpful, friendly and efficient.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Winkler, even though we only saw our room at night. As I mentioned in my introduction, The Winkler is a great place to stay if you are going to explore the area. However, if you want to use it as a base for exploring the Kruger National Park, it is not ideal, as you have a 20-25 minute journey to the nearest gate. I would definitely stay again if the opportunity arose.

Room Tip: Corner suites are large, with an extra large balcony

We have just completed a 4 day conference hotel at the Winkler in White River. It is the ideal conference venue. The rooms are large, comfortable and modern and the whole hotel is in great condition.

The food is fine with more than enough variety.

The conference venue itself is great for conferences with a large venue as well as 2 smaller breakaway rooms.

The hotel is not far from the Kruger National Park allowing for soe leisure time.

The only complaint is that with modern technoology, there should be no reason for wireless connection to be available in every room and not simply the hotel reception (which was a dodgy connection).

Although it wasn't the hotel's fauly and eventually I solved the problem myself, but a group of travellers' decided that talking on top of their voices and blow drying their hair at 3am in the morning is not a problem. a simple explicative and a bang on their door did solve the issue.

All in all, an excellent venue.

I stayed here with my wife and 2 teenage children on a DBB rate for 4 nights. After an extremely poor experience at a Protea sister hotel for 3 nights just prior to our visit I was dreading it BUT the experience was completely the reverse. Every single staff member was curtious, accommodating and extremely helpful. Management were always around and available if required.
The accommodation itself was comfortable and the hotel is in very good 'nick'. The childrens activity room etc... was good to ok but may need a few new odds and sods soon. Pity it was too cold to use the impressive pool (although this did not stop my mad son from going in!).
Definitely worth a visit - try an amarula Dom Pedro as an after dinner night cap in the bar/lounge if you get the chance and most of all relax and enjoy your stay.
