For those who don't know, The Umtamvuna Nature Reserve is 170km from Durban city on the N2 South Rd. The closest town is Port Edward before one crosses into the Eastern Cape.
The Umtamvuna Nature Reserve is approx 3257 hectares in size and lies along 25km of the Umtamvuna River Gorge. Its source is in the Ngeli Mountains in the West and flows into the Indian Ocean in the East forming a natural political border.
The Umtamvuna Nature Reserve forms part of the Pondoland Centre of Plant Endemism wherrby many endemic (not found any where else in the world!) plant species can be found!
Spring offers a grassland flowering to rival Nambia and it has been recorded that the plant bio-diveristy of more than 1400 flowering species. (Compare this to the Kruger National Park wherein only about 200 species are found in a area 500 times greater than this coastal reserve.
The views of the gorge and river are unsurpassed! Don't miss it!!
