Nestled under giant oaks in a Cape-Dutch style building, it is hard to believe that you are not in the Winelands but in the heart of the City of Gold. The ambience and unique setting already scored huge bonus points but we were not adequately prepared for the culinary delight that was to follow. Olives, sundried tomato, artichoke - preserved and presented with the finest herbs and spices. Vegetable cannelloni, grilled hake in a dill sauce, homemade balsamic glaze with a hint of berries. The desert was to (literally) die for. Baklava - the best I have ever tasted, homemade cheesecake, phyllo pastry parcels with Lindt balls - need I say more? A culinary delight - my tastebuds went to heaven.

Olives and Plates, located on Wits West Campus is a delightful surprise. Who would have thunk that lurking amongst the tens of thousands of students there would be an oasis of serenity and sublime food. Frequented by students, professors, ladies who lunch and business people, the formula applied by O&P clearly works. We were there for brunch and having had excellent Egg Florentines, if we could have squeezed 'em in, we would have opted for a slice of cake from the nothing short of dazzling offering available. We will definitely be back, sooner rather than later to do just that!

We used to come to Olives & Plates at least once a week and have lunch there. The food is always good and the setting is nice. Things started changing ,end of last year, when we came to Olives at 11am (too late for breakfast and too early for lunch) for coffee and maybe a slice of cake. We were however told by the waitress that she would charge us extra for sitting at the table if we did not order for a minimum of R65 per person! The place was empty! So we left and had our coffee and also a lunch somewhere else. We decided to give Olives another try, as we did consider ourselves regulars, but the same thing happened. The waiter practically asked us to leave by giving us an ultimatum of either ordering to the amount of R65 or leaving. There were plenty of tables open around us. Besides this the service has deteriorated. There is a large sign saying "wait to be seated" but waiters and managers just ignore you and walk past you. It also took us 25 mins to get our drinks. Olives needs to realise that their snotty attitude to their regular clients means they are loosing them. I think they have gotten a chip on their shoulder and if they want to implement such rules then they should not have a restaurant on a university campus where 70% of your clients are students (that actually order food as well). You built up a young, loyal client base but we do not appreciate being treated like your establishment is too good to serve three cappuccinos at 11am when you are empty. I think it is insulting to implement a rule like that after students gave you most of your business and your good reputation. I will not be going back to Olives and will rather buy my lunch or coffee from another establishment that embraces it's clientele.

Dear Kirsten

Thank you for taking the time in sharing your experience.

I am truly disappointed that we were not able to provide you with the service you were expecting and thus enjoying your time at Olives and Plates.

Our store runs at a high occupancy for lunch between 11:30 - 14:00 and unfortunately this has lead us to impose a minimum charge. At Olives and Plates we highly value our clients. We have taken your comments very seriously and are looking into the issue. We would appreciate if you could contact us regarding the issue info@olivesandplates.co.za

Your feedback is extremely important to us and once again thank you for your comment.

We look forward to seeing you again.

Saturday lunch here was so lovely. Didn't manage to get a table under the oaks, but inside was very nice too. Very well priced fare, huge selection on the menu, and wonderful waiters and service. We loved this relaxed lunchtime with friends. A variety of deserts are displayed for you to view and choose... which was a treat. But the biggest surprise were the prices of all on the menu, in comparison to other similar Mediterranean type restaurants in Johannesburg. Really good value, not over the top, and fresh quality ingredients. I am vegetarian and the salads and veg were tip top. Yes we were all impressed.
