“Great place, just stay away from the massage”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 November 2010

We had made a booking in advance but were not sure if it was the best place for our budget.
The room we got was a standalone cottage on the far left, great view & privacy was just what we wanted, costed us 3100 a night which I felt was value for money. They have a private beach which is great, that made the money worthwhile
Kovalam is a great place for food, so we didn't need to eat at Palmshore often, the breakfast was nice but may not be to everyone's taste, the dinner too was good, i.e., above 'average' but not yum...
The bit that really ticked us off was the massage which is what we started our stay with. The doctor walked us through the types of treatments, gave us the benefits of all on the list and let us make our own decision; however, felt some explaining would have helped (especially about the 'medicated steam' - more about this in a bit).
Then started the massage; now maybe we had high hopes when we got here but the massage wasn't really that great, the guy did the foot massage, etc but I felt the massage I get at Ayush in Bangalore is far far better. Then came the 'medicated steam' @ 800 which the guy didnt let me sit in for more than 5 mins, he was constantly checking if I was was done. Steam is for you to sweat right - or was I asking for too much??
So 2 things that got me feeling I made the wrong choice with this hotel - the attitude of the massage guy and the price, I mean 1400 for the massage was bad enough, 800 for the steam was simply a RIP-OFF, overall the massage was an absolute mood killer
However, Kovalam fixed the bad start, the light house, the shacks and everything around was just great, really loved the place.
What I liked was that the front office manager asked us about our experience and when we told him our story, he called the lady who manages the massage centre and assured us he would fix this problem.
Overall, thought we had a bad start , we enjoyed our stay and I would certainly recommend this place for everthing apart from the massage

Had it not been for the food i woudl have surely rated this hotel as excellent. This is the only and in my opinion the major short coming of this hotel. They had a buffet breakfast which consisted of the usual toast, cereal, fruit, fruit juice, tea/coffee and south indian breakfast which is fairly varied but the south indian breakfast was always too oily and on most occassions cold when it was supposed to be served hot, the first night we ate there the food was reasonable. The fourth and fifth night we went down to the restaurant to eat and were told that there wasn't a menu and that the hotel and decided to do a buffet. the food was cold, chappati was brittle, and service was poor.

This is an excellent resort and their ayurveda treatments are equally excellent but they really need to improve on their cooking and serving skills.

We visited the hotel for Ayurvedic treatment combined with beach holidays. The Ayurvedic treatment was very good, the doctor and the treatment people were very nice. For India the treatment rooms were quiet clean, although I never saw any desinfection between different customers. Only water was used for cleaning.
The food was ok, but not very extravagant, for a middle class hotel acceptable.
The service in the reaturant depended on the employees, bur mostly it was very good. The service of the reception people was good, although we sometimes thought they are a little bit nerved to see us again.
The location of the hotel was bad, because although the hotel was a nice place to stay, there is nothing nearby to visit. You have to walk a while until there are shops to get books for example.
The rooms were clean although the bed was equipped with old matresses and pillows and they had an uncomfortable smell. The bed linen was changed every day. There was a little bit of mould in the bathroom, but not too bad. Only cold water.
The sleep quality was ok, although we heard several noises from other people, from animals and from the room service, which finished at night, so you could sleep quiet good.
The hotel offered an airport shuttle, both times the drivers were on time and friendly.
The hotel has security boxes which we used without any problems and there are security people on the property all day and night.
Loss of power everyday, but it was finished within several minutes.

We stayed here for 2 nights at the end of my 8 day Kerala trip and this hotel was my second choice as the first one was unavailable. At first impression every thing seemed lovely with a clear sea facing room, neat and clean interiors, nice swimming pool and lawn etc and the best a private beach...... but slowly things became clear as we stayed on.
Food was tasteless to say the least and expensive compared to other hotels we stayed in Kerala, now the rates "maybe" comparable to other Kovalam hotels but compared to some eatries right on the Kovalam beachfront this hotel rates were at least 20-25% on the higher side.
Private beach was private since it is a small stretch between two rocky corners and not easily accessible for general public but then the beach was dangerous and only a small portion was fit enough for bathing, compare this with the actual Kovalam beach or the light house beach which are excellent beaches if fun is what you need so we felt the private beach was not suited to us Indian types, only foreigners who would like to sun -bath on a secluded stretch or good swimmers could fancy this one.
Now that the private beach was ruled out we headed for Kovalam beach and we had to walk 10-mins to reach the main Kovalam beach, this is not very nice if you need a unrestricted beach access and the way to the beach was somewhat deserted although it was full residential maybe as it was off-season but we felt unsafe to trudge there in night, meaning we missed our after dinner sea beach strolls
Similarly for the food/market etc you have to travel 10mins to access beach eatries and shops, hardly anything around the hotel, this was again bad since hotel food was not upto the mark.
Finally Service left a lot to be desired, but the shocker was when the pool attendant snubbed me and my wife and almost scoldingly told that he would not allow us in the pool after we do sea bathing, logic being the sea sand enter the pool. we reasoned with him that we'll take a thorough shower before entering the pool but he was adamant. this surely left a bad taste. there were a few other minor irritants like noises from other rooms at the night, not direct access to rooms from sea which many other rooms had...etc tec...
All in all i would recommend choose this hotel with caution

Stayed here for a couple of nights at the end of a tour of south India. It was out of season so the place was quiet and a lot of local businesses were closed.

It was comfortable and clean but somehow lacking in character. The food was OK, not as good as in other stops on the trip, and it seems that the staff were unprepared for us during the off-season.

They do push their massage/beauty treatments but don't explain them too well to the uninitiated.

Would stay again if in the area, but there may be other places just as good if not better.
