You can watch The engraver at work while browsing through the jewellery. A sign indicates the meanings of the engaged symbols. A great place to buy momentous of your trip or pick up presents for loved ones.
I had read about this guy before I arrived on the Island.
Luckily he had a shop at the Saturday market so I was able to see him at work and what a craftsman he is.
His jewellery is exquisite and very reasonably priced.
I bought some of his work for my wife's birthday and she was delighted with it.
You must check him out.
Tokerau Jim carves pearls and the carving is exceptionally fine. Its not to my taste as I think it detracts from the pearls but I was intrigued to see the results and I can definitely appreciate the quality and detail in the carving. He also makes various ornaments from the shells and will engrave your nae fro free. The quality of the engraving was top rate. A nice inexpensive souvenir to take home
The carvings are just beautiful and they have pieces starting at $8NZ so you can find something in your range. It is worth going for a look even if you don't plan to buy. They also sell black pearls. (They do not start at $8). :)
Staff was friendly and knowledgeable.
We fell in love with Tokerau Jim's work.
His carvings on the black lipped pearl shell are beautiful. The symbols used are wonderful. he has a shop and is at the markets on Saturday, where he does the engraving (of people's name's on purchased jewellery).
We got two beautiful, intricately carved, shell pendants, as well as some smaller pendant pieces too.
Tokerau Jim is also one of only a few pearl carvers in the world.
Go, even if only to check out his work. Lovely.
I popped into Tokerau Jim's while driving into Muri Beach. It is a lovely shop, with a great selection of merchandise. However, despite walking around and looking at numerous displays of pearls I got no help, suggestions or even a hello, from either of the two women working. And there was no one else there. Perhaps it was an off day for the team, but my recommendation would be to go somewhere else.
