Ranginui's Retreat has 8 bungalows complete with ensuite and kitchen to be fully self-catering. All bungalows face the retreat's beach.
You can use the sea kayaks to explore this part of the lagoon. With lots of sandbanks around it is really safe to explore the motu's to the south where you also find corals.
At the beach it is save to swim but not a snorkeling spot.
Steve the owner is most supportive with anything you need. He was fully booked for the first night we wanted to stay and he found us a great homestay just down the road.
Ranginui's Retreat is a bit of a base for Kite surfers with Steve's son operating Wet and Wild to get you out to Honeymoon Island the Kite Surfer base.
As you are quite far away from the main village a scooter you can rent from Steve is a good mean to get around.
Breakfast and Lunch is available from Koru Cafe. Lunch and Dinner from the Boadshed, both in walking distance.
Overall a nice place to stay on Aitutaki

The best thing about staying here is by far the location. Over looking a beautiful lagoon where you can go paddle boarding and kayaking, they are free to use - another plus point!
The actual bungalow is basic but we had everything we needed to manage to cook in the evenings. If you can, take some food with you from the main island as it's even more expensive on Aitutaki. There are no shops near to this place and you have to hire a bike in order to buy food. There are a couple of restaurants however.
The toilet in the bungalow is long drop style. This would have probably been fine if we were just staying for the 1 night however, any longer than that and you get a lot of flys.
The girls running the place are very sweet however not business minded at all. Even asking basic questions "how much are the boat trips" and where to find things they couldn't help us with. A pair of shorts went missing off our balcony and when we asked them if they had seen them we had a response of "urrrr"!! I know this is an island and you have to remember things are done in the "island style" but the amount of people turning up for enquiries about the place and there was never anyone in the office.
We arranged a boat trip for our last day on the island, we were flying out that night and thought it would be perfect. That's why everyone goes to Aitutaki. The boat cancelled our trip at 8am that morning. However, they called the office and left a message - because people would normally be working there. Myself and my partner waited outside the front of the resort for 1.5 hours waiting for the boat company. We had not been passed on the message from the resort. I am not blaming the boat company at all, they had given enough notice and had we have known we would have been able to get onto another boat trip. But, once again, there was no one there to tell us and so we missed out. We ended up going to another resort and asking them to ring the company as our place was empty and no one was there to help us!
Bike hire for the day is $25 if hiring through them, very costly for 1 day of hire!! Perhaps try the restaurant down the road as it may be cheaper there.
All in all a great location to stay and very basic.

I stayed at the ranginui sunset for 6 night and was a good place to stay, there are 3 villa/cabins right on the beach and the best place to snorkel on the island, you will need to hire scooters or a car as town is about a 10min ride.

The cabins are self contained but you will need to provide your own food and other items. Steve is the owner and normally stays at ranginui retreat at the other end of the run way, near the boat shed. His son and daughter run this one and stay right behind the villas.

Quinton (owners son) also runs his own day trip cruises called Wet n wild, ask him for details (water sports day trips).

This is a great place for big families or groups

They are also still renovating this little hide away for better upgrades and things to do.

We've stayed here on 2 occasions and both have been pleasant.
The accommodation is simple and clean. Small kitchen with most things you need. Comfortable bed, table and chairs, spare bed, composting toilet, shower ran hot and cold but mostly showered cold anyway. Air con was available at an extra cost but we didn't use it, had a ceiling fan and that was enough for us. Small deck out front where we spent a lot of time relaxing and enjoying the amazing view of the lagoon just steps away. Kayaks free to use, but you have to pay for paddle boards. Scooters available for hire. Boatshed Bar & Grill, Aitutaki Village Restaurant/Bar and Koru Cafe all within walking distance. Ootu beach also within walking distance. Swimming out front is still lovely. Small pool also here which we used and was always clean.
No frills accommodation, great for the budget traveller

We had been staying at another place on Aitutaki on the outside of the lagoon and had a great experience and we were so looking forward to our inside lagoon stay. However, it was such a disappointment. We had booked back in March (staying in November). When we were finally picked up (waiting 1 hour 10 mins) we were shown to a room which was obviously not a 'proper' room, completely run down and musty smelling and didn't even have a room number. We were told just to leave our bags there whilst our room was being cleaned. We went for a brief walk and when we came back I asked which was our cabin and was then told that the room we had left our bags in was it. Clear deceit. I expressed that this was unacceptable (in a nice way) so we went to the office and explained that that room in no way resembled what we had booked back in March. The owners response was 'well go somewhere else'!! He then looked at his book and said come back in an hour. When we came back we were shown to another cabin. It really left a bad taste in our mouths, a horrible way to start the second part of our Aitutaki experience.

The room was OK, but very limited kitchen supplies as in not even a sharp knife. The bed was pushed up against a wall which makes things awkward. The shower was hot but the shower head would not stay up so you had to hold it. There is a pit toilet. I felt disinclined to ask for a knife or the shower to be fixed after the owners attitude.

The view is lovely and there are a number of restaurants nearby. Get the ferry over to Aitutaki Lagoon resort and have a beautiful meal for only a couple of $$ more. Their glasses of wine were HUGE! Karu cafe is great also. If you have a bike head down to Tupuna's in the south middle of the island. The food is excellent.
