Aitutaki Lagoon Resort & Spa
Ranked #6 of 10 Hotels in Aitutaki
Reviewed 12 August 2017

We had been planning to come here for a long time and due to the high profile endorsement, particularly Katrina Rowntree through Getaway we didnt do a lot of research. With the amount of money we were paying per night, surely it would be pretty good right?! Wrong!
From the moment we arrived this place just felt so tired, run down and lacked any atmosphere! The staff look like they did'nt even want to be there, and were also not very helpful, knowledgable or didn't show any enthusiasm. The reception is boring and the entire place is lacking well needed maintenance and some tender loving care.
The rooms are ok but nothing more then that. The sheets and in particular doonah covers are something you would expect in a 2 star resort. No internal bathroom or shower, just an outdoor one that was outdated and lacked any pressure. The TV barely gets any reception and you have to pay for WIFI which is an absolute joke considering the rates we paid. Even then it doesnt work that well.
The seats around the resort and old and faded, the plastic chess pieces on the beach actually brake when you pick them up and were full of water. There are no lights around the resort, or lack of, and its difficult to see when walking around at night. The outdoor spa near the restaurant was not even working and we were told ' oh its broken weve been trying to fix that for a while now. Don't think about buying anything from the tiny shop there either. We bought a can of aeroguard which cost $22! Daylight robbery.
And the food! The worst we've ever had. The tropical breakfast was appalling, both in quality and variety. My wife wen without breakfast on the 2nd morning, and the third we went up to the local cafe off the island to finally get something half decent. I will leave it at that. The one place you can eat at for lunch and dinner is also terrible. The lunch menu is like a run down pub menu, and the dinner is only slightly better. The menu's themselves are in old crappy folders in plastic sleeves that look like they havn't been changed in 5 years!
The property managers have a huge task trying to save this place. Obviously some rich owner is making a fortune because there is no money being put into this place.
The property managers will no doubt respond to this review to try and disagree but read the other very similar reviews to ours. We dont mind paying good money for good quality and have been to many 5 star resorts in Fiji, Maldives etc and we are dumbfounded how this resort is classed as 5 stars.

Kia Orana Glen and Antionette,
Thank you for choosing to stay with us at Aitutaki Lagoon Resort & Spa and as discussed in previous correspondence we value all our guests reviews and we appreciate you taking the time to provide us with such candid feedback of your visit to the resort.
I am very sorry we did not meet your expectations and I am especially disappointed to read that our friendly and helpful staff were also below your anticipations as per previous reviews they always receive very good praise for their honest and hard work.
Of all the reviews that I have received yours is the first one to comment on no internal shower which surprises me as a lot of guests remark how much they enjoy the opportunity to shower under the stars. As explained our TV reception is dependant on our one carrier in the Cook Islands and we are on a very small Island in the middle of the Pacific and a long way from an urban environment which can offer free WIFI.
Our gift shop carries many different types of goods including insect repellent which is imported from NZ or Australia and we do not control the costs of freight, duty and taxes which are levied on imported items. The Spa is operational and I cannot understand your comments on the location of the Flying Boat Beach Bar and Grill as it is without a doubt the best positioned restaurant in Aitutaki that commands the most panoramic view of the lagoon. Truly a wonderful location for afternoon cocktails or a private dinner for 2.
Sue and I do realize we have challenges to meet and as mentioned on your departure why did you not request to discuss your issues as everyone is encouraged to do so whilst on the property.
Warm regards,
Mark, Sue and the Team.

Visiting Auitutaki Island had been a bucket list trip for many years for us. We were returning home to NZ from Los Angeles stopping g off at Auitutaki fir some rest & relaxation. The flight landed at 6.30am on a Sunday morning in Rarotonga and our connecting flight to Auitutaki was at 11. 30am. We had to sit in an undercover area (no sides) during wet and windy weather. Most unpleasant. Flight to Auitutaki is on a small plane so recommend taking ear plugs as very noisey and if you have sensitive hearing would be painful. I was very grateful I had them. Weather turn stormy for the first 3-4 days so very little to so. Unfortunately Auitutaki Resort& spa has become run down, no spa pools working nor is there any spa treatments available. You need to be transferred to another hotel for these which we believe is misleading advertising. Many guests booked at this hotel for this reason, including ourselves. Food was delicious from the chef but they had problem with ants at the breakfast buffet area. Staff were friendly and polite and went out of their way to be helpful. New management had recently taken over so we wish them well in bringing the resort up to the standard in which they ate charging. Paying 5 star prices for 3 star hotel is not acceptable. For 2 people on over water bungalow Nz$8000 for 7 nights (incl flight from Raro to Auitutaki) then add food and beverages. Well and truly over priced in comparison to other locations. We will not be returning.

Kia Orana Karen and Martin,
Thank you for staying with us at Aitutaki Lagoon Resort & Spa and sharing your thoughts and comments in your review.
Yes it is a long wait in Rarotonga after arriving at 6.30 am and I am hopeful Air Rarotonga will look into this for all arriving guests from the USA. The plane trip from Rarotonga takes approx. 45 minutes and yes it is a relatively small plane but once you arrive in Aitutaki the views for the plane are magnificent.
Sadly the weather did not play it's part for a number of days whilst you were here and activities and general relaxation were effected. As mentioned in previous e-mails our Spa is now fully operational and we no longer have to use the facilities at the Pacific Resort.
I am pleased to read you enjoyed your meals and my team work very hard to ensure guests have a positive experience and your review supports their efforts so thank you for this and I will pass on to the staff your encouraging words. Sue and I do have important positions and we look forward to the challenges and rewards that come with managing a beautiful resort like Aitutaki Lagoon Resort & Spa.
Again Karen and Martin thank you for staying with us.
Warm regards,
Mark Sue and the Team.

Just had 12 nights here. It was very relaxing and perfect setting.

The managers Mark and Sue have done a great job making many improvements from the reviews 6 months ago.

The staff were lovely and helpful. The F and B team - Vaseva, Nanise, Maria and Irene. Front desk - Mii Thomas from maintenance and many more.

There were lots of kayaks and paddle boards to explore the lagoon.

The tropical breakfast in the morning was large and lots of items, it was very good.

Our bungalow was island rustic and quite comfortable and a great view.

Please remember you are on a remote Pacific island and you can't compare to large world cities.

Easy access to the main island from the little ferry.

I would go back in a minute !

We stayed few days in this small resort and it was heaven!! It is quiet, in the perfect location for the beach and small restaurants nearby.
The staff make you feel at home and always friendly and helpful.
They have bikes we used to visit the island and had an amazing time.
Really recommend this place if you want to relax and admire the beauty of the surrounding.

We would give this resort 4.5. The rooms were comfortable, clean and with a large bed. Private island setting was very nice. Friendly, easy airport transfers. Breakfast had quite a lot of choice and there were good water activities. We would have liked a gym and free wifi and overall the staff were generally friendly but there were a few exceptions where some were a bit brusque. We would definitely recommend the resort. We spent a lot of time considering whether to stay as it's quite expensive but are very pleased we did as it's a great resort. We would whole heartedly recommend the Vaka cruise which can pick you up from the hotel.
