Raiatea Lodge was the first place we've stayed based entirely on Trip Advisor reviews. And I have to say, based on this experience (and our second one, Vahine Island) I'm VERY IMPRESSED with this website because RAIATEA LODGE was great!
We stayed for four nights in May, booking a deluxe room (superior room, can't remember the name) and got the half-board -- so Breakfast and Dinner. We also ended up eating Lunch there on at least two of the days.
Technically, this is a 3-star place, but I'm not sure what that means. What I do know is the place is lovely, the staff are amazing, and the room was great. All of this at 1/4 the price you pay for a nice room at one of the more posh resorts on fancy islands.
The building itself reminded me of something out of a Hemingway novel. Most of the ground floor was an open air lounge -- next to the open air dining room -- which spilled out onto the green lawn. All of this adjacent the sea (you do have to cross the road to get your feet into the water).
The entire grounds have FREE WI-FI (take note Four Seasons). And there are free bicycles (though I don't recommend taking them all the way into town) and free kayaks and that kind of thing.
Just opposite the hotel is actually EXCELLENT for snorkeling. The area isn't large but there are a lot of fish just to the right of their picturesque pier.
There is no beach here. It's not that kind of island or hotel.
Was Air-conditioned, had a flat-screen tv (only French channels), nice blacony and comfy bed. But the best feature was the bathroom, which had been nicely updated and modernized. Considering I've paid in excess of $1,000 for rooms in French Polynesia, I have to say this room is probably the best VALUE I've had in four trips to FP.
A lot of reviews mention the food, and with good reason. It is really excellent. And their menu is versatile enough that you don't get bored after 4 nights.
Everyone was great. One thing, this is NOT a resort property, so this isn't a place where there is a big staff to cater to your every whim. But everyone from the owners to the woman who cleaned the room were helpful and available anytime we needed them.
I want to take a moment to single out the ladies who served us for meals. These women were just so great. Warm, friendly, REAL. We looked forward to seeing them at every meal and that is just quite a gift when you are on holidays.
Raiatea shares a lagoon with Tahaa, so in essence, you can get almost THE ENTIRE EXPERIENCE of Tahaa without paying Tahaa prices if you stay here.
We took a LAGOON TOUR -- which was excellent. There is good snorkeling on Tahaa, I wouldn't say it is as good as say Moorea or Rangiora, and not as good as some reviews have led me to believe, but still the boat trip (which includes stops at a Vanilla Plantation and a Pearl Farm) is a must do.
We also took a RIVER TRIP via Kayak -- which I also recommend. Raiatea is the only island in FP to have a navigable river and the kayak trip is unqiue. It isn't very long and certainly not challenging -- but the scenery once you get inland is the kind of view you can't get ANYWHERE else in FP.
The Raiatea Lodge is really a hidden-gem. Anyone who likes to travel and wants to have an authentic FP experience needs to put this place on their list. It is a great value -- heck it is great -- period. We would absolutely return.
