“One of the dingiest hostels I've ever been to”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 June 2011

We made San Jose our last stop just to have a place to stay before our flight out to the States the next morning. When we arrived in the evening, we knew at first glance that we didn't want to stay there. However, since it was cheap and late at night, we decided to just stay since it was only for a few hours.

Was it the worst experience of our WHOLE trip in Costa Rica. Once we stepped in, the people who stayed there and the employees look like they were on something that made their eyes all glazed. The whole hostel looked dirty from the bathrooms to the computers to the beds. We didn't even want to sleep there so we attempted to stay up. However, failed to do so. We ended up sleeping for 2-3 hours, got up right away, and zoomed out of the place. We didn't bother getting ready there since the bathrooms looked disgusting. Instead, we got ready at the airport bathroom.

What turned me off the most was some of the employees were extremely RUDE. All of them are kids from USA which was odd. One kept ragging on where we live (NYC) and another accused my friend of hitting on one of her coworkers. It was bizarre. I would not recommend staying there. All throughout Costa Rica we stayed at hostels and this was the worst. In fact, I've stayed at plenty in Europe and Japan, and this is definitely at the BOTTOM of the list.

I travelled in central America for a couple months and didn't find a hostel that gave me a more friendly and homey vibe! I fell in love with Galileo and had a very hard time tearing myself away. Actually, purposely found my way back there a lot in my time in costa. The staff was really friendly and helpful, the hot showers a plus, informational, feel vibe and cleanliness of the whole thing overally really good! There is a kitchen which has pretty well any utensil you could need. The location is great as well close to supermarkets, downtown, busstops, la sabana park, central market and the bus stop to the airport. You also feel safe, as the security is good. There is wifi and computers to use as well. The rugged pineapple bar is a really great time as well, open all night and just try to drink the whole periodic table! I would definatly not stay anywhere eles in San Jose! Galileo is a must visit, miss you guys!

Maybe it was our timing... but.
otherwise the atmosphere is great and the bar has cheap drinks.
People like to hang out downstairs.
watch out for the beds out in the middle of the hall. Make sure to ask where your beds are located if getting a dorm space.

I liked this place. The rooms were small but clean. It was a good value for the amount of money you pay. However, I think that a lot depends on the sort of atmosphere you prefer. We were looking for a nice place to get a quiet nights sleep before flying out; this was adequate but not the best. If you are looking for a place to socialize and have fun and drink with other people then 5 stars stay here. People were raging all the time. They have a 24-hour bar and there are ALWAYS people there. If that is what you are looking for stay here! We slept fine and didn't have a problem with noise. The staff was pretty helpful but kind of strange. In general I felt like the partying was the primary emphasis.
