We had been to lovely Costa Rica before. We love its rain forest, the people, its food, its great coffee. Our neighbor who not only had been there before heaped praise not only on the country as a whole, but upon the dental treatments available he grinned at us showing his beautiful teeth. We were also familiar with the US prices on implant surgery and cost of crowns and had ruled it out as we already had a mortgage on our home.
We were skeptical of the quality, costs etc. We did a lot of checking, obtaining references from local clients and a year later we decided this was too good to pass up. We were looking at a quarter of the US cost. The flight, hotel Taxis were negligible. When I talked with Sergio at the Hotel Cristina I wanted a twin bedded room, one was not available at the time which was the middle of March but he offered us a two bedroom where one of the rooms had twin beds. It turned out to have three and a kitchen dinette and living room all bedrooms had very silent air conditioners. Not really needed we were on the top floor with magnificent view of San Jose and the breeze took care of everything.
Really got a little taken aback, when our taxi wove its way to the dental surgery, the town was not built yesterday and you pass many older buildings, but once we got up and into the offices all passed. This surgery would not take a back seat to anything I have seen in the US, or Europe, in fact many of my co-patients were from California to New England, Indiana, To the Carolinas and of course Florida. Holland, Canada and Spain and education in itself. All ages and all races.
After the first two days the worst was over and all that remained now was waiting and healing and waiting for the crowns to be made. The Hotel Cristina was buzzing with Americans ready for biking, hiking, canoeing and sightseeing. We signed up for a day to get to the volcano a wonderful breakfast lunch some great photography,
Oh and the extra treat...Hidden on the second floor of the hotel, The restaurante Olivo. We went down to it from our apartment on a Thursday night, it was packed, a great Italian menu, the owner a former chef from Rome has a gold mine and the food was fantastic, the prices were moderate, about $50.00 including two glasses of wine and tip. Some other restaurants a bit more perhaps but worth every penny the Grano deOro a must for excellent food and atmosphere.
On a Saturday or Sunday The Marcado Centrale was the place to go. Fresh fruits vegetables and of course the greatest coffee in the world. I had already prepared one suit case to help sate my friends on my return. The hotel staff maids were excellent the breakfast left a little to be desired, but hay this is not Miami. The desk was terrific, tours, taxis suggestions were super helpful.
A month later we have nothing but gratefulness for a great venture a magnificent complete dental restoration and a fantastic holiday at a very affordable price.
