The place has charm/character. Its not in the best area-especially for a solo female traveler. Gated entrance, which is a hassle to be "buzzed in and out" some of my trips were very early in the morning. Young girls work the desk, some friendlier than others. I had 2 different rooms at different points of my trip, very basic rooms and bathrooms, clean enough. Walking through the common kitchen-this was not very clean and for this reason I did not eat breakfast at the hotel (really only had one opportunity to do so, as I was usually gone by 6AM)
My room was upstairs-so keep in mind if you packed on the rather heavy side you will have to carry your luggage us a slightly spiral staircase with 20 steps to the next full platform.
The second room I was in had a slate board bed with no box spring (do not remember if the 1st room had one or not, but it was a lot more comfortable) One of the boards seemed to be lifted up and right in the middle of my back.
There is free coffee on the outside patio available.
People who complain about the hotel itself should think about what they are spending-again you get what you pay for.
What I didn't realize through the reviews is how unsafe I would feel in the area.
There are ladies and gentleman of the night who solicit just a half a block down from the hotel.
Luckily, I found a wonderful place to eat just across the street at Don Carlos. I highly recommend eating here and its literally diagonally across from Hemingway Inn.
Would I stay here again? probably not as a single traveler. The airport is at least 45 mins away and that's in medium traffic (traffic in San Jose is terrible) A taxi cost me 30 dollars,
But as an over all experience. I had a true taste of San Jose :)

Room Tip: Ask for a downstairs room if you have heavy luggage. Otherwise you will carry it up a spiral 20 step stair case

I've been coming to this hotel for years and this year's visit was as expected. It's a charming hotel, every room is different and unique, it's cheap and no frills. It's a safe hotel in a slightly sketchy neighbourhood that offers good value for money. It's clean and the free breakfast is plentiful. Wi-Fi is strong in most areas of the hotel.

Quick walk to downtown restaurants and the bus stations. (After dark take a taxi)

Staff is super friendly

One negative point - I had ordered a taxi pickup from the airport through the hotel. Driver never showed up. Same thing happened to my travel companion who arrived the day before.

I will likely return to this hotel on my next visit to San Jose.

I arrived at the hotel to check in. The travel website stated that it took Discover which is how I was going to pay for the hotel. The clerk took my Discover card and said that it didn't work. I had cleared the card before I left that it would be used outside the US. I just wanted a clean room, not so worried about having tons of amenities as I planned on spending most of my time away except at night. She hadn't told me that they didn't take Discover, so I had to cough up the cash. Not something I planned for. I was given a room where I had to pass thru the kitchen. A bit odd, but ok, let's see the room. I went into the room and the smell was over powering. Very strong, musty smell for lack of a better word. I asked for another room. It was a little better. I checked it out and the bathroom light was flickering and I could see holes in the ceiling and because of poor air circulation, mold could be seen on the ceiling and holes as well. I went to the front desk and mentioned that it was flickering. The clerk asked me if I wanted a different room. I said, ok though not sure why they didn't just fix the bulb. I was moved to another larger room. It was better, so I took it as I had been traveling all day. Similar smell, but livable. I was concerned though as I have asthma. During my week stay, I had only gotten housekeeping twice when the ad stated daily housekeeping. Toiletries consisted of soap only. I had no room phone, the bathroom after a day smelled of sewer and I found tiny knats all the time in both the bathroom and the bedroom. Not sure what they were from, but they were there every day. Poor shower drainage. My toilet would not flush after a few days. When I made mention to the front desk, I was asked if I put TP in the toilet. I was told that I was not supposed to do that. No one had told me not too flush the TP. After they cleared the toilet a sign was put up. Hmmm place used TP in the waste basket next to the toilet. The internet they claim for patron use never worked in the week I was there. No door knob just a drawer handle to open the door and a lock on the inside. Where the knob should have been, a plastic cover was all that was between me and the outside hall. Escort service might be legal in Costa Rica, but I was subjected to seeing a payment going on when I was trying to check in. The clerk made a call when the young woman arrived nearly 5 minutes after I did and made a call. A questionable man came out and asked should he pay now or later. My thought s are, if you bring your family to this hotel, will they be subjected to this? Like I said, maybe it's legal, but it wasn't something I think the travel company I booked with may not want to be part of. Maybe I am wrong. I am a single female and traveling alone. NOT what I want to see. The hotel pictures are not current and looked nothing like what I saw. This hotel was completely staged, so take your money and go someplace else. I didn't even feel comfortable eating in this hotel if they keep it the way it was and the breakfast was free. As they had taken the weeks stay in advance, I was at a loss should I had left early. Run, DO NOT Walk to another hotel. When I looked to book, the rooms looked nice and over all the reviews were pretty good. NOT so much. Best in your search.

Hotel itself is nice enuff, and rooms and bathrooms clean and funcional. But there is somebody working there who is stealing and the the manager as usual Tico style refuses to acknowledge it and confront it......My brand new Samsung smart phone was ripped out of my room, probably by the cleaning lady as she was the only one I saw close besides two old ladies who seemed to be the only other tenants in the hotel......I left my room open briefly to dash to the front desk and when I returned my phone which had been charging all nite long next to the bed was gone......We called it and already turned off......Just minutes......And the manager was not the slightest bit sympathetic or helpful. In fact CostaRican style, they made out like I was to blame......Its my fault for leaving the door open for 2 minutes......when only the cleaning lady was around............I would not recommend this hotel to anybody at this time until they get the problem fixed and/or get new management.......this hotel is anything but customer friendly..........It is another glaring example of why tourism is failying in Costa Rica...........And in this case does not refer to the pricing........
