“Small town hotel”
Reviewed 5 February 2012

Well kept little hotel except the rooms were old fashionend and nothing special but it has everything what is needed. Our room did not have any windows, that was negative but it is a place where we felt safe. They have a nice little outside bar for a nightcap, breakfast was ok and staff was very friendly. For a short stay we would recommend this hotel.

Dear Guest:

We are very pleased to see that you liked our small Hotel Fleur de Lys.
Yes you are right, it is a bit old fashion. We are proud to tell you that the main part of the Hotel is 150 years old. By the remodelings we carefully reuse the old woods, windows and stone floors.
In most of the tropic hot towns, big houses have a patio with lots of plants in the middle of the building. The windows open up to this patio, now they have better air, no hot sun and no noise from the busy town, but of cours you will not have a vew of the town. If you come back to Costa Rica, aske for a standard superior, these rooms are on the first and second floor and have windows looking onto the town.
Look to have back some day

"WOW" was our first word, since we didn't expect such a nice hotel in the center of San Jose.

Room Tip: Our standard superior double roon was more than okay.

We stayed at this hotel for a total of 3 nights at the start and end of our tour, staying in 2 different rooms, and this was the worst out of all the hotels we stayed in. Voyages Jules Verne have used the Fleur de Lys on their Costa Rica tour for a while now, but are moving to another hotel from April, which implies that we aren’t the only people who haven’t enjoyed staying there. The location is a mixed blessing – it is certainly very close to the centre of San José, but even closer to a local railway line which has very loud trains on it from 5am during the week. Even with earplugs it was hard to block out the noise of the train horns, resulting in some poor nights of sleep. The outside of the building is covered in pink corrugated plastic, which isn’t particularly attractive, but the inside of the hotel has more character. Unfortunately, when it comes to the rooms, character does not equal comfort and both of the rooms we stayed in were dark and cramped and needed refurbishing. Breakfast was basic but adequate – we certainly didn’t see any of the muffins and pastries described by other reviewers when we were there! Most of the staff were pleasant and helpful though and the free internet access was very useful. There are quite a few restaurants/cafés nearby – turn right out of the hotel and then right at the next corner and you will come to Café Urbano (good for cheap snacks) and Nuestra Tierra (nice food but rather expensive). All in all, the location is the best thing about this hotel – but if we ever go back to San José then I think it’s unlikely that would be enough to encourage us to stay there again.

The exterior of the hotel isn't much, but the interior is absolutely charming - colorful tiles, pre-Columbian art on the walls, decorative fountain, and wood paneling. The semi-transparent corrugated panels over hotel common areas give the whole place a nice brightness. When my husband and I showed up with our toddler and reservations for a basic room through a package deal, they offered us a room upgrade without asking. They put us in the "Flor de Lys" suite, complete with jacuzzi bathtub.

The 2 guest rooms I saw were a bit dingy, partiularly the carpets, and the drain plate in our shower had a sharp metal shard sticking up that could have cut our feet. However, I stress the common areas really are lovely. The location is great too - next to the National Museum and the nearby pedestrian street closed off to cars for shopping.

The reason I sadly can't recommend this hotel is that it backs into train tracks, where deafeningly loud trains start passing through and sounding their horns at 5:30 am. No one in my family could sleep through the ruckus. Otherwise, it'd be a very good choice for San Jose.
