"WOW" was our first word, since we didn't expect such a nice hotel in the center of San Jose.

Room Tip: Our standard superior double roon was more than okay.

We stayed at this hotel for a total of 3 nights at the start and end of our tour, staying in 2 different rooms, and this was the worst out of all the hotels we stayed in. Voyages Jules Verne have used the Fleur de Lys on their Costa Rica tour for a while now, but are moving to another hotel from April, which implies that we aren’t the only people who haven’t enjoyed staying there. The location is a mixed blessing – it is certainly very close to the centre of San José, but even closer to a local railway line which has very loud trains on it from 5am during the week. Even with earplugs it was hard to block out the noise of the train horns, resulting in some poor nights of sleep. The outside of the building is covered in pink corrugated plastic, which isn’t particularly attractive, but the inside of the hotel has more character. Unfortunately, when it comes to the rooms, character does not equal comfort and both of the rooms we stayed in were dark and cramped and needed refurbishing. Breakfast was basic but adequate – we certainly didn’t see any of the muffins and pastries described by other reviewers when we were there! Most of the staff were pleasant and helpful though and the free internet access was very useful. There are quite a few restaurants/cafés nearby – turn right out of the hotel and then right at the next corner and you will come to Café Urbano (good for cheap snacks) and Nuestra Tierra (nice food but rather expensive). All in all, the location is the best thing about this hotel – but if we ever go back to San José then I think it’s unlikely that would be enough to encourage us to stay there again.

The exterior of the hotel isn't much, but the interior is absolutely charming - colorful tiles, pre-Columbian art on the walls, decorative fountain, and wood paneling. The semi-transparent corrugated panels over hotel common areas give the whole place a nice brightness. When my husband and I showed up with our toddler and reservations for a basic room through a package deal, they offered us a room upgrade without asking. They put us in the "Flor de Lys" suite, complete with jacuzzi bathtub.

The 2 guest rooms I saw were a bit dingy, partiularly the carpets, and the drain plate in our shower had a sharp metal shard sticking up that could have cut our feet. However, I stress the common areas really are lovely. The location is great too - next to the National Museum and the nearby pedestrian street closed off to cars for shopping.

The reason I sadly can't recommend this hotel is that it backs into train tracks, where deafeningly loud trains start passing through and sounding their horns at 5:30 am. No one in my family could sleep through the ruckus. Otherwise, it'd be a very good choice for San Jose.

We have stayed here for 2 nights in April 2010 as a starting hub/finishing hub to our travels through Costa Rica. The rooms are clean but the accomodation I would rather class as a B&B and not a Hotel. Their evening dinners read and are priced like a 5* Hotel which Fleur de Lys clearly isn’t. If you want a nice dinner, walk 5 min to the Argentinian Restaurant around the corner, La Esquina, very tasty food indeed ! Breakfast in the “hotel” is “allright”…but nothing special.
The reception staff and bar staff have all been very friendly and the “Hotel” is positioned in walking distance to shops and markets and Sights to See. However, due to the railway and other industrial works nearby its NOT a quiet accomodation (angle grinding going on over the road until late at night !!)
The clocks in the hotel room were not set to the correct time, therfore we set all our clocks/phones wrong and got up an hour earlier than we needed to, or wanted to, after the long journey to Costa Rica from the UK.

All accomodation is in need of updating, the showers and especially the soaps provided (all the same for body, hands, hair) are absolutely horrific and have a cheap smell to it. A plus is that the “Hotel” offers free WIFI and Internet (too slow though) which was very helpful after 2 weeks of being more or less cut off from civilisation (all Blackberry UK Global Roaming Users). The rooms do not have a Safe but are equipped with a minibar and TV.

The “Hotel” has an outside seating area by the road where you might be bothered by passing beggars but otherwise it was nice to sit out with a cold drink. We walked to the market nearby where you can buy last minute gifts for your friends, its massive and offers everything.

A good chaep starting/finishing point to your journey through the country.
