“a real gem.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 February 2012

We stayed at Hotel Mandarina during our 6 day stay in Manual Antonio. Staff were very welcoming and friendly, ready to give advice on restaurant options and directions in the area. Upon arrival our room was updated and we had a lovely view of the grounds and pool area. I loved waking up and seeing the monkeys in the trees just outside our window! The breakfasts were simple but delicious; a great way to start your day by sitting on the beautiful patio surrounded by lush greenery. After an unfortunate situation with our rental vehicle, we ended up having to extend our stay (originally would have headed to the Caribbean side sooner) without much notice to the staff. They were very hospitable and it was no problem to stay an extra night. Not to mention they were also sensitive to our rental vehicle situation that put a bit of a dent in our plans. In the end we did not mind staying an extra night! We loved Manual Antonio and the people there. This hotel was just one of the gems.

My fiance and I stayed at Hotel Mandarina for 2 nights in January 2012. Our safe was broken, so our only option was to put our valuables in our suitcases. On the second night our hotel room was broken into. All of our electronics were stolen in including 2 very nice cameras, Ipod, and cellphone, plus $400 in cash. We filed a police report, but the owner did nothing to help us. The security guard at Hotel Mandarina only works part time and does not patrol the back where the rooms are, so this hotel is NOT safe. We have no doubt that this was an inside job. After the theft we promptly checked out and stayed at very safe hotel down the road called La Mariposa, with 3 full time security guards. If you are planning to visit Manuel Antonio, I highly recommend staying at a hotel that has full time security, such as La Mariposa or Mango Moon. It's worth the extra money!

Room Tip: The beds are VERY hard at this hotel. If you are used to soft mattresses you won't like the bed...

We had an incident at Hotel Mandarina, the night of January 26th. In the almost 5 years of owning Hotel Mandarina, other than an in-room LCD television being pilfered, this is our first robbery.
This is especially troubling to us since we have had walls built around the parts of the property that face uninhabited land. We have a security guard that patrols the front AND rear in addition to other guards that watch the area for other establishments. We have security cameras (apparently we will have to install more because ours did not record anything to help us with this case). Our rooms have deadbolt locks and in-room electronic safes which can hold a digital SLR camera and wallets, etc.
Two rooms were entered after the parties left to go out, without damage to the doors or door frames. Items from one room were stolen. In that room, the safe was not used. What is puzzling is that the first time that the guests (who had their items stolen) emailed us, they did NOT mention that the safe was not working. When they replied several days later to my inquiries, they stated that the safe was broken. Our night manager explained that on the second day of the guests stay at about 4pm, the guests asked for help using the safe. Our night manager proceeded to show them how to use it. Our night manager told me it worked and still works as of now. If it still did not work, our manager could have given them a key to use, instead of the keypad. She is in the office until 9PM.
When our guests returned around midnight to find that they had been robbed, they found our security guard who phoned our daytime manager who came back to the hotel to bring them to the police station for 4 hours. We obviously did not charge them for their stay. We don't have insurance for theft of guests belongings. It is not customary to have insurance for that and even if we did, it would be very hard to prove what was taken and the insurance company would probably give a very difficult time. For instance, someone could say they had a $5000 diamond necklace taken.... how would you prove it? And we are not going to just give someone money to keep them from writing a bad review. Please get traveler's insurance, which may not have covered this anyway.
It is extremely bad luck that the door of the hotel room was not properly locked (if it was, the door would have to be kicked in) and the safe was not used. We don't know if someone sneaked onto the property or if someone brought guests that they didn't really know well (Some hotels like the Parador do not let you bring unregistered guests!) In any case, guests MUST use their in-room safe or the safe in the office for their valuables. They MUST double lock their doors. This is Costa Rica. We have beaches, beauty, friendly people, lots of critters (some pretty scary), volcanoes AND we have thieves.
We do have, contrary to our guests review, comfortable beds. We feel bad for what happened, but no-one was hurt and we will use this unfortunate event to scrutinize our procedures and upgrade our surveillance system. As far as this being an "inside job," our workers have been with us for a long time, are hard-working, and would not do something so foolish to jeopardize their jobs.

We hope those reading will still consider staying at Hotel Mandarina.

We absolutely loved our stay here!! At first sight from the street, it doesn't look like much, but that's only the reception desk which is separated from the rest of the hotel. The hotel is actually down the driveway in the back, surrounded by jungle. And the rooms are just gorgeous!! They are all stand alone rooms that offer a lot of privacy. The furnishings are very beautiful and the rooms were the most comfortable of the ones we stayed in throughout our whole trip! This was the only b&b that actually had coffee in the room which was a great bonus as the coffee in CR is AMAZING! All the other hotels (big and small) that we stayed in had coffee makers, but no actual coffee. So that was a nice touch. The property is also quite lovely. The eating area is outside, surrounded by the rooms, the pool area and of course the jungle! Which by the way is full of monkeys, sloths, lizards, birds and all the other beautiful animals of Manuel Antonio.

We arrived in Manuel Antonio after spending a few days in Arenal and Monteverde where we didn't seem many animals. We were getting a little disenchanted with CR because we thought we'd see animals everywhere and Manuel Antonio was our last stop. What a welcome surprise it was! Within 10 minutes of arriving, we took a seat outside to have some coffee when we noticed some commotion in the trees. Imagine how excited we were to see about 10 monkeys jumping around and coming down to check us out. It was unreal. Our 5 days in Manuel Antonio were full of animal sightings! We saw a bunch at the hotel, walking down the main road, and of course at the National Park which is a must see!

There are many great restaurants in the area as well. Across the stress there's a bar called Aqua Azul that has fantastic food and drinks, and a great view of the ocean. Down the street there is an awesome taco joint called Sancho Taqueira that we ate at twice, run by a really funny guy named Samuel. And on Friday nights there's an amazing Brazilian bosa nova band at Cafe Milagro (2 doors down from the hotel) and they are not to be missed!!

We really enjoyed our stay at Hotel Mandarina. Andres, the owner was extremely nice and had lots of advice and suggestions about the area. The food was fantastic too. They didn't offer any lunch or dinner, but the breakfasts were amazing. A huge spread of fresh fruit, eggs, and your choice of pancakes or french toast. And of course, lots of Costa Rician coffee! I think breakfast starts at 7am, and on our last day we had to leave at 7am, so Andres arranged for the cook to come in early so we could get a meal before we departed - which was very nice of him! There is also a security guard who walks the grounds at night. I didn't get his name, but he was so sweet!

All in all, I absolutely LOVED our stay at Hotel Mandarina and will surely return on my next visit to Manuel Antonio :)

Hola Lisa!
I am overjoyed that you enjoyed your stay at our hotel and that you got to experience the wildlife that Manuel Antonio has to offer. There are so many fascinating animals and birds to see, sometimes you see something new each time you go to Costa Rica.

What is nice about our location is the proximity to great restaurants. While not beachfront, it is a robust 20 minute scenic walk downhill to the nearest beach, or a 5 minute bus ride to the main beach. You can walk down to the nearest beach and then along the beach to where all the shops are, and then take a bus back (that's what I usually do).

Thank you for all the compliments on our hotel, we appreciate it.

We were interested in staying at Hotel Mandarina, but were weary of booking through the hotel's website. It requires your credit card information just to make a reservation request. We decided to check out the place when we actually got to Manuel Antonio. We were pleased with what we found.

The grounds are beautiful. It is built into the side of a hill. The landscaping is lush. The room was very well appointed. It was the nicest room of all the other hotels we stayed at and yet the cheapest. It looked similar to a big brand name hotel. It was very clean and the bed was very comfortable. The pool looked very inviting. There is a huge lounge area nestled under the tree canopy. Below it is a game room with board games, pool table, etc. There is also a secure and private parking lot which was hard to find at other hotels. When we woke up we walked out to the lounge area to use the free wireless internet. We were greeted by monkeys and birds. The location was great. Across the street is a good restaurant with a picturesque view of the ocean. There is a beautiful beach within walking distance that is very secluded. The is also a bank and supermarket close by.

Our only disappointment was with the staff. The woman at the desk at check in was not very welcoming. Our interaction was strictly business and lacked hospitality. We were interesting in things to do but she was not very helpful finding things. In the morning the staff that was preparing breakfast did not greet us or try to speak with us. They did answer a few questions we asked. The staff was not unfriendly, just completely uninterested in their guests.

We would visit this hotel again. It was very beautiful and an extraordinarily good value.

Hola Matt D!
Thank you for your kind review of our hotel. For those travelers just inquiring about open dates before making an actual reservation with a credit card number, you can just email us at contact@hotelmandarina.com. You can also fill out the form with desired dates and leave the credit card info blank. We will let you know either way.

I apologize for our front desk receptionist not being engaging enough. I will talk to her about this. She may have been distracted by Facebook. Our staff that cleans and serves breakfast are excellent at what they do, however they do not speak much English and are quite shy. They also may not want to feel like they are being intrusive. Please don't take it the wrong way.
Alonzo, our maintenance guy... is very good with kids and showing people around the property. I guess you did not meet him.

Again, I want to thank you for this very positive review and hope to see you again.

Andres, who is in charge of hotel operations, was extremely helpful with everything, and we loved our apartment (two bedrooms, kitchen, dining area, 4 beds)! We had breakfast every morning out by the pool, which was delicious. Hotel Mandarina was just what we were looking for- an affordable hotel with friendly & knowledgeable staff members in a beautiful location. On our last day, we saw 8 monkeys running around the rooftops of the hotel!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Hotel Mandarina is a small boutique hotel. It has a history in Manuel Antonio since the early 1990s. It has previously been known as Hotel El Dorado Mojado and Hotel Kekoldi. In 2007, the 12 unit hotel has been given the new name Hotel Mandarina. Mandarina is known as a small orange, like a tangerine, in Costa Rica. Hotel Mandarina is located in Manuel Antonio, just outside the small Pacific coast port town of Quepos. We are at the highest elevation on the main road about halfway between Quepos and Manuel Antonio National Park. If you choose to drive, you can park your rental car in our secure lot behind the reception building. Manuel Antonio is only 3 1/2 hours by car or bus from San Jose, so long as you take the shortest route. Faster yet is a 20 minute plane ride from San Jose on Nature Air or Sansa Airlines. Quepos and Manuel Antonio are fairly easy to navigate since there are only a few main roads. We are just 3 km away from some of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica with the entrance to Manuel Antonio National Park at the end of the main road. A twenty minute walk down the secondary road from the hotel will bring you to a secluded beach. The local bus stops 50 yards from the hotel and brings you to the main beach or Manuel Antonio National Park in 5 minutes. There are several restaurants and cafes within walking distance as well as services like supermarket, bank/ATM, bars, yoga/spa, gym, and souvenir stores among others. ... more   less
