We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of Manuel Antonio National Park with our guide, Juan Brenes. We were with our 4 year old daughter and were happy to find 2 other families with young children on our tour. Within 5 minutes, my daughter and one of the other girls were holding hands and walking through the park. It made for a much more pleasant experience for the adults because the kids had each other to interact with.

Juan was great with the kids, taking the time to show them the animals through the binoculars and pointing to things up in the trees. He explained about the different animals and plants in the park and he captured the kid's attention. My daughter was not bored and never complained once about the walk.

I would definitely recommend hiring Juan, or one of his guides, to take you through the park. You can do it on your own, but you would really miss so much. These guides are great at finding small animals that are camouflaged in the trees and plants, and you would certainly miss them if you didn't know where to look. In addition, you will learn so much about the the animals, flora and fauna in the country.

Yes, the park is crowded and often there are 3-4 different groups of people crammed into a small area trying to look at an animal, but it's one of the most popular national parks in the country, so that's to be expected. Try to avoid it on the weekends b/c lots of locals come to visit the park. Also, try to get there when they open to avoid the crowds.

You can also pack a lunch and bring a towel and have a nice picnic and swim in the ocean at the end of your tour. The beaches in the park are stunning!

We had Gamma recommended to us and we could see why. He was such a great guy and very informative, took his time on the tour and wasn't in a hurry to escape for the next tour. It's a good job we had him with us because we wouldn't have seen hardly anything if he hadn't been with us!! He also brought along drink, fresh fruit and lollipops for us.

The Manuel Antonio Park is a wonderful nature preserve that includes all the sorts of native animals you'd want/hope to see (monkeys, colorful birds, multiple kinds of iguana, and the like) plus unexpected things like tiny deer who are native to Costa Rica.
Our guide, Paulo Gonsalves, had a keen eye for finding well hidden critters and providing interesting details about both the animals and the fascinating plants.
The walk through the park is easy, although much of the walkway is an uneven combination of dirt and smooth stones. We noticed a broad range of ages making the journey and everyone we saw, young, old and in between, seemed to be enjoying seeing the unspoiled slice of nature.
Because the animals blend in so well, this is the kind of trip that can be repeated many times without losing freshness.

We used MA Expeditions to get a guide to Manuel Antonio park and also to take us as a private transfer back to the airport. Our guide at the Park, Paul, was great. We saw lots of iguanas, frogs, sloths, monkeys, a deer, and a lot of plant life. He also told us interesting information about Costa Rica.

The person who drove us to the airport, I think his name was Rene, was also fantastic. He didn't speak English, but my husband speaks Spanish and they talked the whole way. He answered questions for us about what we saw, stopped when we asked him to, and told us about regular Costa Rican life.

Both of these were arranged by a tour company for us (CR Referrals) so we didn't know anything about MA Expeditions before.
