Took the bus/boat from San Jose to Tortuguero on the Atlantic coast. Total time was about 5 hours. There are alternative van services for about $20 at this writing. Hotels in low season (Npv thru June) range from $12/night with breakfast to hundreds for the fancy lodges. I stayed at the hotel Princesa which was near the beach. My room had a good bed and a hot shower and was perfectly adequate for my purposes. Maintenance was indifferent but rooms and linen were clean and thee sound of thw ocean soothed me to sleep every night.
I visited the Tortuguero Web site qhile planning my trip and came across a page for Silvia Van Der Heiden. She speaks English, Spanish, Dutch and probably a few other languages. She was an invaluable resource a truly nice person and welcomes couch surfers. At no extra cost she facilitated my hotel booking, arranged to meet me at the boat and arranged for fantastic hiking and canoing through the jungle. During my time there I saw three types of monkeys, many frogs including a plethora of poison dart frogs, iguanas and other lizards, various types of bats as well as caimen, raptors and a couple of types of herons. Oh, I forgot about the Green Turtle that we observed while laying her eggs. If interested you can contact Silvia through tortuguerovilliage.com/reservations or through facebook https://www.facebook.com/silvia.vanderheiden.3 Bus direcrions from San Jose are on the Tortuguero villiage web site.
