On one hand, you must realize that this remote hotel and compound is a good 6 hour drive over the mountains on difficult roads. There is little shopping in Puerto Viejo, and not many lux facilities. But then the remoteness is a joy unto itself, and the sleepiness of the little village reminds me of Cozumel 40 years ago. OK by me. The hotel has weak wifi even in the lobby, and the lighting in the rooms is minimal. The showers were a disappointment.
But overall I think it is a great place with enough amenities to satisfy a wide range of clients looking for a clean, mostly quiet beach experience. The grounds are very well kept. English speaking with some glaring exceptions. Harvey, our night walk and bird watching guide, was generous and helpful with sharing the sloths, bats and lizards. All inside the compound! With the surfers in the amazing surf less than 50 meters away from your veranda! Bring your binoculars and bird book to appreciate the wonderful variety of birds. The restaurant had good rice and beans with various accompanying meat or fish, but don't order a margarita! Pineapple wonderful. Food pries weirdly mirror US prices, but hey, you are on vacation. More
