Chocolate will never taste the same anymore after a visit at CariBeans! Yes chocolate tastes much richer now ... well ... good chocolate from here! The chocolate is natural, organic and produces on an ethic & sustainable way, a place and people of my heart! They keep the old cacao trees and the surrounding jungle natural, organic and as diverse as it is already for years. They pay honest prices to their indigenous employees who work here and they pay also a honest price to other local chocolate farmers when they buy chocolate from them. They are also make their own chocolate which is rare in this area and in general. Moreover, this couple is so honest, friendly and warm hearted that I can only love this place.
But above that the chocolate is delicious, with a taste of real chocolate! During the tour you get to taste - on top of a hill with a stunning view on the coastline - different chocolates in combination with herbs & spices what gives very surprising flavours! A very nice experiment which I did now at home for friends and family :-). It's very interesting to follow the whole process from the cacao tree to a chocolate bar so that from then on, while eating chocolate, the taste of chocolate every time reveals the whole story of the cacao. I loved this visit and tour at CariBeans!

Goal of local artisan chocolate makers - the Masters are Indigenous women - is to make Puerto Viejo area a chocolate destination by nurturing the 100 year old trees and engaging & employing the Indigenous people who were gifted with them & have been making chocolate for generations innumerable. There's a Chocolate Festival in October. We toured the Mango Walk cacao farm uphill from the shop that features products from all local cacao fincas & artisans. Not to be missed!

The tour was extremely informative and interesting, and lasted quite a bit longer than we thought it would with all the information that was provided. To cap it off you get to do a great chocolate tasting with beautiful ocean views. Highly recommend, although this time of year it's super hot out so in the cooler months it would be more enjoyable in this area of Costa Rica in general. That being said, it was very interesting and the chocolate was great!

For $28pp 2 hour tour, so worth the money! Love that this place is giving jobs to locals and reviving the once diseased cacao farms. This US owner knows his stuff! We learned so much. It is a bit of a steep walk. Don't wear flip flops. We got to sample bits of chocolates from different local farmers and mix it with different herbs, spices, coffee, honey etc to make our own personalized flavors. We drank hot liquid chocolate then we toured the small factory. It ends in the store/restaurant/coffee shop where you get 10% off. We bought coffee beans and chocolate bars to take home. I give this place a 5 star, which I rarely do! I highly recommend. We are staying at Congo Bongo and took a 7000 colones taxi there..ate at Tasty Wave, next door first! Read that review..another 5 star for the shrimp tacos! Yum!!!!

We stopped by following the many recommendations we got for this place. After ordering water and the cold chocolate we decided not to take the chocolate tour and left instead. What happened was the grumpiest service personnel we encpuntered throughout our whole stay in Costa Rica, which was full of friendly face and good impressions. We thought the bar lady is probably just having a bad day, but it turned out she was in pretty good mood when talking to other people, but didn't care about us at. The cold chocolate was ok, but because we felt so unwanted we finished it as quickly as possible.

We are sorry for not meeting your expectations. Our staff is normally friendly and good at adapting to conatant changes in language accents cultures and standards of friendliness. Sadly the friendly atmosphere left you feeling rejection. That is not our desire and we are sorry you had these feelings at our shop. At least you enjoyed your iced chocolate. We also know the rating is your opinion but is in our opinion too strong considering our staff did not purposely treat you poorly and you gave us no way to make you satisfied.
