“Wonderful hospitality, perfect location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 April 2012

We just finished up a week at Geckoes and truly had the vacation of a lifetime. The property is stunning and so well managed. I can't say enough good things about our hosts, and all of their help with restaurant recommendations, travel pointers, trusted tour guides, and more. Tom and Zoe's guests are their top priority, and that makes being one of their guests a real treat.

The location of Geckoes is perfect. We were secluded from traffic and road noise, surrounded by rainforest trees and plants (plants that the hummingbirds loved, we got to watch them every day!). We were within walking distance of the beach and a handful of restaurants, and an easy walk or cab ride into Puerto Viejo. The house was so well-kept--I've never wanted to spend time at the place I was staying more than I wanted to go and explore, but the hammocks, plunge pool, and howler monkeys were all keeping us company, so staying in was just as fun as heading out!

As first-time travelers to Costa Rica, we really got lucky in finding and booking this place. I feel like I stumbled upon a best-kept secret, and the next time we go to book it there will be an 8-month waiting list!

I have to begin by saying, nobody could write a review that could possible describe this special jungle retreat and the feeling you have while standing and looking in amazement at the perfectly situated Bali styled homes in this dense, beautiful, magically mystical, piece of paradise. Wildlife was something we have never experienced. It was incredible waking up to howler monkeys, toucans, parrots and many others right outside your window. We got up early every morning with coffee to sit and listen and watch as the jungle came alive. Tom and Zoe are the perfect couple and hosts. We were celebrating our anniversary, so I emailed Tom and asked if he could put a card out to surprise my husband. They went well beyond our expectations. We arrived to a plate of fresh strawberries, assortment of chocloates & nuts and champagne...and they acted like it was no big deal...To us, it was something that made our day more memorable and unforgettable. This was truly an experience of a lifetime, not only the location in the middle of the jungle but only ten minutes from the beach by golf cart. The owners could not have been more welcoming, just like old freinds from the start. We really enjoyed talking to them, they are very knowledgable on local area and activites. Their accents and world traveling made the conversation so interesting that we could sit and talk for hours over wine, which we did, and hope to do on our return visit. Pueto Veijo was really laidback, island vibe, safe, close, great shops, and incredible food. Matter of fact, Tom and Zoe made several restaurant suggestions and these are the ones we tried and you wont be disappointed. El Refugo, Jungle Love, Malbec, El Paso, Todo "everything is possible". And we cannot forget the hospitality of Jose and Tica, who kept the place immaculate and well supplied. Junior, who picked us up at the airport and was a blast to hang with. Stopped at several "local" places for authenitic food and drinks, along with a history lesson on the way...very interesting. We have been to most of the USVI, BVI, Aruba, Jamacia, St.Lucia, Bahamas, Mexico and this was by far the best vacation for hospitality, location, safety, diversity, culture, weather, wildlife, scenery, mountains, jungle, rainforest, beaches. Most importantly Geckoes, when you read Barefoot Luxury its true, thats the closest any one could come to describing this Magical & Mystical place. To be more accurate, I should say Expereince. I need to say Thank You Tom & Zoe for making dreams become reality.
You have made a very special place and memories that we will cherish for a lifetime.

My husband and I stayed at the Geckoes Lodge for our honeymoon and it definitely exceeded our expectations!! The two guest houses, beautiful jungle setting and the amazing hospitality set this place apart from any other in Puerto Viejo. We were greeted by Tom and Zoe when we first arrived and I can't tell you how nice it was to feel so welcomed by them, especially after a long day of traveling. Since we arrived in the evening, we were not able to stop at the grocery store at all. However, Tom had us covered with all the groceries that we needed, including breakfast items and even a nice bottle of champagne to celebrate us being newly weds! They even provided us with some left over chicken that they had grilled out for dinner that night. It was a fantastic way to settle in and they made us feel right at home. We stayed in the Casa del Bosque for 7 wonderful days. The house was extremely spacious and we really enjoyed opening all of the bedroom doors in the morning (after the monkeys woke us up) and just lie in bed and soak in the jungle surroundings. We could have spent hours looking through the binoculars that Tom and Zoe lent us! Also, I highly suggest renting bikes to go to and from town and the beaches. It is a great way to explore Puerto Viejo and it cuts down on expense with taxis. Plus, when you get back from your day at the beach, you can cool down by hopping in to your private plunge pool right in the middle of the jungle! That was probably one of our favorite things about the Casa del Bosque. The plunge pool is surrounded by natural vegetation and you feel so secluded in the jungle, it is quite an experience! We also loved the full outdoor kitchen and grill that they provided us. It had all of the comforts of home, and if you needed anything, just as Tom and Zoe!! They were always more than willing to help with anything that we needed. They gave us several restaurant suggestions (which were amazing by the way) and even provided us with a cell phone to use while we were there to make local phone calls. We didn't even think of that! We would have spent a fortune on cell phone calls! It is the little stuff that counts and it is what Tom and Zoe have perfected at the Geckoes Lodge. You can stay at other places near the beach, but you are not going to get the jungle seclusion, or the true costa rican experience that I'm sure you are looking for. Also, you definitely won't find hospitality like this anywhere else. Stay at the Geckoes Lodge and you will leave with an amazing jungle experience and two friends that you can't wait to come back and visit!!

We travelled with our 15 month old daughter who was quickly adopted by lion hunters Fred & Charlie - who are just as wonderful as Tom & Zoe. Our goal was to simply relax and not to venture out too much. Mission accomplished the moment we arrived. I guess we knew before we arrived with Tom arranging transportation and even a child seat for the trip from the SJ airport to Geckoes, but were truly taken in by Tom and Zoe's hospitality. They truly make it perfect. For the first 10 days we stayed in Casa del Bosque and then another week in Casa Bromelia. Both places are fantastic, with amazing attention to detail, great design and a brilliant jungle feel. We ended up doing a lot of walking (stroller with big wheels was key) to enjoy the beautiful beaches and go for relaxing meals (with Malbec being our favorite). The last few days we rented bicycles which allowed us to get out to beautiful Punta Uva.
We certainly did not experience all the amazing outdoor activities that Costa Rica has to offer but the lodges and Tom and Zoe made this a phenomenal and totally relaxing vacation for the three of us.
If you plan to go to CR, then don't think twice, take a break from all the trekking around and enjoy a stunning place run by very special people - and very loving lion hunters!

We recently had the pleasure of a second stay at Casa Del Bosque: after spending a week at Geckoes for the most incredible Honeymoon just over a year ago, we decided on a return trip to explore the region a bit further. Both holidays were perfection - as somewhere secluded to relax in the most beautiful, tropical paradise, or as somewhere to have fun and explore. The location of Geckoes Lodge is just perfect - your jungle lodge is secluded enough to give you a great sense of privacy, isolation and tranquillity but you're only 15 minutes walk away from beautiful deserted tropical beaches, an excellently equipped supermarket and the lovely, sleepy village of Cocles. Beyond that, you're only a short ride (or an easy & enjoyable walk) from the laid back beach front town of Puerto Viejo.

Staying at Geckoes isn't like booking a room in a hotel - the lodge really does feel like your own private house; it's more like renting a house from a good friend than booking your standard holiday villa. Everything inside & outside of the house is equipped to the highest standards - from the wonderfully comfortable four-poster bed, the luxurious shower and bathroom to the excellent rocking chairs, hammocks and very well appointed kitchen. Tom and Zoe's ability to maintain a faultlessly high standard of luxury whilst making the whole thing seem totally effortless is both a joy and a wonder to behold. Special mention must also go to Jose & Tita, whose almost invisible presence belies their tireless work (after a while you begin to imagine that everything always stays perfectly clean & tidy in the rainforest... then you realise that Jose & Tita have been working hard on making everything look perfect & tidy whilst you were out lazing at the beach!).

Tom & Zoe's knowledge of the local area and local people is invaluable - they can tell you everything from who best to speak to if you want to organise a trip / tour, to where best to eat / drink, to how to stay safe whilst you're out and about. Incidentally, we've never felt unsafe in Puerto Viejo / Cocles at any time of the day or night - I can understand why petty crime is an issue but with a little common sense it's a perfectly safe place to hang out and enjoy yourself. For example, if you were back home, would you leave your wallet / purse / i-phone / passport on the bar whilst your went off to the dance floor to shake-your-thang for the rest of the night? No, you wouldn't - so why do it on holiday? It's a credit to Puerto that the majority of people there are so friendly and will look out for you. Nowhere is perfect, but PV is pretty damn close.

There are a wealth of adventures to go on and places to see - although we wont bore people with everything you could get up to, the Jaguar Rescue Centre was a wonderful place where we heard all about the rescue work they carry out, and more importantly, got to hold a real life monkey (or two, or three... or four...!). The Wahoo boat tour was also fantastic fun - Nick and Janet go out of their way to cater for everyone and show you a real good time!

In a nutshell, we would recommend this place to anyone who is wishing for somewhere beautiful to chill out, watch the flora and fauna, and just have the most amazing time. We love it and just cannot wait to get back out there again. Zoe and Tom, keep some coconut rum ready for our return!
